 Fantastic Jazz clarinetist- Frank Glover
Author: Ed

There are some great performances on youtube of Indianapolis jazz clarinetist Frank Glover. He is a terrific player with amazing command and a great jazz vocabulary. He has a really great modern jazz sensibility that you don't hear that often in clarinet players.

Great technique, ok sound, but lacking in musicallity overall. His approach to each tune is too irractic. Lots of good ideas but he just doesn't seem to connect them together and deliver a coherent musical statement. Maybe its just my old ears used to hearing Artie Shaw, Eddie Daniels or even Bird.

Nice stuff. What I found depressing was the background noise. It's a shame that musicians of this caliber have to play in a place where their music is, for the most part, being ignored.

Well, it's a gig and you gotta eat. But, I agree the background noise is a bother. Would love to see him on stage in proper environment to better evaluate his performance.

Frank did play at the Clarinet Fest in New Orleans. It is a shame that he is one of those guys that is not better known. If you want to hear more of him you can get his music at CD Baby

On Siamese Twins he is playing duo with the same pianist, doing a variety of standards. The other- Politico has him playing in a variety of settings- quartet, strings as well as with big band. Frank did all of the writing on that one. You can also get the CD Politico on iTunes. Check them out to get a much clearer picture of his talent and playing.

I heard Frank and his quartet with Claude Sifferlen on February 13, 2008, at the DeHaan Auditorium in Indianapolis.

Frank and Claude were a Downbeat 5 star performance.

The bad news was that the bass player was amplified, the amp was set for boom and set on full volume. He totally covered up the clarinet/piano/drums.
There was no way that a person could do melodic dictation on what the bass played since the sound was so distorted.

Frank has outstanding technique. He has great range and control.

His performance in New Orleans was pulled down by a local trio that was not up to the chordal structure that Frank plays.

It is unfortunate that this kind of talent is unknown to most of the jazz community.
