anyone else have their bonade break? (more than likely)
i realized when I got the Bonade a few weeks back it would be a tight fit with Gonzalez FOFs. Well today at an honors band clinic with David Shaffer, it broke. I resorted by using a hair tie. I have more ligatures but are most bonades now like this with thick blank reeds? I'm back in the market for a new ligature. hip hip hooray....NOT

These things last forever if you oil them regularly. Key-oil or even motor oil works fine for oiling ligatures.
If you don't... they break, just like yours did.

I never had a problem with my Bonade and thick blank reeds. It snapped about a year ago when I had a student trying it and he tightened the screws. The lower band snapped right near the rail. This student was using Rico Royals. I use Legeres now.
Bonade ligs usually need tweaking when they're new (as opposed mine that broke; it was 25 years or so old!).

Did the ligature itself snap, or did you just break a screw?
If it's the latter, they're easily replaced.

You should give the Luyben lig a try. He was a student of Bonade, and I find that his lig works extremely well...without having to spend all the time adjusting it "out of the box".
And at $12...

A very good ligature, to my suprise, is the Rico H. I am not a fans of their reeds, but this is their version of the Harrison Ligature.
Oh and go the the gold plated, it's only $20. Though the only place I have found it is Muncy Winds.

The BG Super Revelation has metal rails very similar to the way the Bonade works, but the body of the ligature is fabric. Because of the design, it fits different types of reeds much better than the Bonade. You might do well to check it out.

I've had the same experience as David Blumberg with my BG Super Rev. I still use the BG, I just don't store it on the mouthpiece when I put everything away.

I've been using the same Vandoren Masters for who knows how long (at least ten years) on both soprano and bass clarinets and none broke. I never oiled them or cleaned them or anything. I tried new Bonades (both soprano and bass) and they did nothing but scratch the mouthpiece and didn't fit. They are cheaper but not by that much and I don't think they have any other advantage anyway (I've tried working ones too)....

The part that snapped is right next to the railing on the back, not the screw. I would imagine that maybe the cause is bending of the ligature weakened the metal. I'm thinking about the BG super revelation, vandoren masters, optimum, or leather, and the luyben. But I must say, the hair tie I used gave the reed this crazy response. I loved it. The bad thing is it's not strong enough to really keep the reed secure.

I still use my old Bonade on my backup mouthpiece, but I have a Vandoren Optimum now on my main piece. I like the versatility and security of the Optimum.SVClarinet09 wrote:

I used Bonades for a number of years. I did not have any breakage problems, but had other issues. Managed to strip one of the the threads on two of them, and the last one I bought had "the creeping disease". Instead of getting tighter when I turned the screws, it just slid up the mouthpiece. I have since changed my brand!

Just broke my Bonade inverted, too. The side split right next where the thumbscrew net is welded on. I was wondering why it seemed to be sitting a little lower on the mouthpiece than normal.
But I got a little more use out of it. I think it is about 25 years old.
Also just broke my Gigliotti tenor lig too - one of the plastic thumbscrews broke.
So I bought two new Bonade inverted ligs, one for clarinet and one for tenor. 25 years is much better than 3 years.
In the past I have found it necessary to file these ligatures down where they split so that they could be tightened sufficiently in the correct position on the mpc.

My vote is for the Vandoren Leather, the BEST Bonade style on the market (with the metal plate).
Funny that the scratching problem was mentioned. I feared this problem with the Eddie Daniels which has a particularly high metal insert (one must be careful when sliding it on when a reed is NOT present).
And finally, I found the Revelation and Super Revelation to have too many sound damping characteristics to even be viable in this category.
