 advices for purchasing clarinet

Hi everyone,

Like lots of people I'd like to buy a clarinet but I don't know anything about it. that's why I need some advices.

First of all, I noticed that it's not a cheap instrument, so I'm wondering what do you think about "study" instruments, between 200-300$. Is it okay for a beginner? Is the sound correct?

I live in Ireland, and I planned to buy my instrument in the usa regarding to the interesting rate of change. I found that website:

Can you give me a hand selecting an instrument?

Thanks,
Vincent.

Hi Vincent,

You're best going for the Buffet B12, Yamaha YCL-250 or the Leblanc clarinets rather than the others as these will outlast the others.

John Myatt has Buffets and Yamahas on special offer for £250 which is much less than the WWBW price:

Though do avoid Heathrow Terminal 5! Luton is the nearest airport to Hertfordshire. Unless you're planning to go fly out to the US or UK, Myatt's do mail order so that'll save you the fare.

The opinions I express are my own.

Or, while we wait for T5 to sort itself out (or disappear back into the pit from whence it came) you could ask around local community bands, or your friends/relations, or advanced players with a large collection of instruments to see if you could borrow one for a few months, or hire it cheap. Or get a second hand one which has been serviced. Then in a year or two, sell it on (probably at the same or similar to price to what you paid) and get something which will last a much longer time. I still have my student instrument as a back up, but I had to upgrade because the speed of the keys wasn't fast enough. When I started I didn't think that would ever happen, but it did, and I really do notice a difference in the higher spec instrument.
