I've never heard that Toscanini liked McLane. Do you have a source?
Augustin Duques was Toscanini's principal clarinet for most of the existence of the NBC Symphony. He was a phenomenal player.
After Duques left, Alex Williams played principal. He told me that he played the big solo in the recording of The Pines of Rome.
A complete list of NBC Symphony members is at http://www.classicalrecordings.org/znbc/nbcplayers.html. The clarinetists listed there are Augustin Duques, Harold Freeman, Alfred Gallodoro, Louis Green, Georges Grisez, Louis Klein, Robert McGinnis, John Peper, Wallace Shapiro and Alexander Williams.
They brought in Benny Goodman to play the Rhapsody in Blue solo for Earl Wild. They also gave the world premiere of the Copland Concerto with Goodman, conducted by Fritz Reiner. There's an aircheck, which reveals merely adequate playing by BG and absolutely dreadful playing by Reiner and the orchestra.

One of the best things Toscanini recorded was the Brahms symphonies in England with the Philharmonia

Here is Toscanini from 52 with the Philharmonia..this is a great sounding set as well. Much better recording quality than the NBC set.

Toscanini, refering to Mclane,: "The finest clarinetist I have ever heard in America". See Laila Storch " My Dinner with Toscanini", The Double Reed. 18/3 (winter 1995),70.
