 music for testing mouthpieces

I'm curious which music one uses to test/choose a mouthpiece. Long tones, scales, performance pieces, a combination? Any strong prefernces or absolute dislikes? Any particular system of playing one's music selection when testing?

A variety of pieces:

1. Difficult stuff!
2. Stuff to test beauty of tone
3. Stuff to test ease of articulation
4. Stuff to test variety of tone colour achievable.
5. Stuff to test the different ranges of the instrument - chalumeau, throat, clarion, altissimo

When Ralph McLane tried new equipment, he usually played the Brahms Lullaby. That is, play something easy and beautiful, to determine how well the mouthpiece lets you play.

I usually test things with the 2nd mvmt. of Weber's concerto No.2 - there's a bit of everything in that which will show up strengths and weaknesses.

Hello,

Iggy Gennusa used to always have me play (just above the staff) g, a, b, c, then right away, that a, slurred up to high e. If a mouthpiece allows you to do that easily, then move on to tuning, etc. Good luck!
