The Clarinet BBoard

I have a big problem, that i can't seem to work out.
i have an R-13 serial number 562296.
My issue is that i have extremely sharp tuning ,20+ cents sharp above the break. If i compensate for that, below the break my tuning will go flat. I have a 66mm barrel with a B taper, and a clark fobes CF+ mouthpiece. The instrument itself is in perfect working order. I use Vandoren V-12, 4 strength reeds. I've experimented with softer reeds and sanding the crap out of my current 4s. It helps a little bit. I know Buffets are designed for european orchestral playing, so its inherently sharp, but not as sharp as mine.
Any ideas?

Try limiting the opening height of the register key (using cork under the key at the end opposite the pad cup), to the point at which the 'pinch' throat Bb starts becoming stuffy. Having the register key just barely opening will lower the pitch of the entire clarion register, especially at the top end. But it sounds like there's more to your problem than just that.

Indeed, there are many possible factors, but here's a couple of ideas:
1. David's idea of limiting the height of the register key is a good one and one that I've done on several of my R-13's.
2. If you're using the stock R-13 barrel, you might want to try a reverse tapered barrel such as a Moennig, Chadash, or Muncy barrel. There are other fine custom makers as well who are sponsors of this site. The taper tends to reduce the 12ths to various degrees and make them more manageable. Also, depending on on the pitch of the mouthpiece you're using, you might want to consider a slightly longer barrel (i.e. 67mm), but be careful if you select such a barrel that it doesn't make your throat tones too flat relative to the other notes on your horn...
3. I usually use a 1 mm tuning ring between my upper and middle joint which also helps lower the right hand clarion notes.
4. I have added tape to several of my tone holes (actually, a lot of them) to assist with the right hand clarion tones and upper clarion (especially B3) . An excellent guide is included in Larry Guy's book "Intonation Training for Clarinetists." Additionally, a good repair person can be of invaluable assistance in helping to remedy tuning issues.
5. Daily long tone studies can also prove invaluable. Again, I like to use Larry Guy's "Intonation Training for Clarinetists" in my daily practice.
Best of luck!

Hi there, if the 12th below are also sharp then putting tape in the top of the tones holes will lower the pitch but that will also make the lower 12ths flatter as well so it probably won’t work. I had an R 13 in the 50K series many years ago and could not fix that problem. No matter who I went to and what ever I used the high B and C were just too sharp and finally had to buy a new clarinet. Trying several different barrels might help but I doubt if but it’s worth a try. The other thing is to go to someone like Chadash, or someone closer to you, and ask them if they can do something about it but make sure you get an estimate on a price first so there’s no surprise. Sometimes even these experienced people say they can fix something like this and after many hours you discover it didn’t get much better, if at all, but they bill you for their time.
Good luck, ESP www.peabody.jhu.edu/457

What do you mean by a barrel with a B taper?
Is this a Buffet barrel or an aftermarket one.
If the latter, how is it defined?

I've had similar issue and a reverse taper barrel (Buffet Moennig 66mm) did appear to help. It also appeared to help with the intonation of other notes like annoying throat tones.
I guess Buffet needs to change something about the stock barrels that come with their R13s since many people seem to be having intonation issues with them.

BandieSF,
actually they DO measure a bit differently now than older models. You will not perceive it as much with a routine gauge, but with a digital internal bore measuring device (such as the West German Fowler) it is more evident.
Of course I wouldnt want them to totally fix em.

I kind of meant that more to be funny, but oh well.
How long ago did they change them and was it just on R13s? I have a 17-year-old (according to the serial number) E11 someone found in an attic and the barrel is in okay condition save the fact that the metal rings are so loose they can be removed and wasn't sure if that barrel would be any different from the barrel from my own E11.
It would be boring if they fixed them entirely, so I wouldn't want them changed either. My stock barrels are still good for some things.

it is a stock Buffet barrel. Exactly what the B taper is- i don't know. I was hoping someone would know.

Ok, I figured it out
B is their label for a Bb barrel....NOT a designation of taper.
So is is a STOCK barrel, not a taper.
Usually it is labelled R13 B 66
The A-clarinet is labelled R13 A 65
etc
