The maker is prob J Gras [whether he had a "shop" or was the builder for someone else, who knows?]. Likely Mark C can look in Langwill and help a bit. Brevet[te] in French means patent [Gras or another?]. SDGC in that time period meant something like " without guarantee by government" prob referring to the patents validity!!,, Lille, I believe is a city in France, manufacturing site?? We have a number of Europeans on our BBoard, perhaps they will add to my efforts! Don

Hi , I also have a clarinet with these markings (except that it has SGDG) that I just bought at an auction and wonder if you have found out any more information about yours? If you have ,and would be willing to share it or let me know where you found out about it, I would very much appreciate it. Thank-you, Tim

I believe J. Gras was a 'real' maker (not a stencil) --- I've seen a few clarinets thus branded and most were Albert system or 'early' Boehm (e.g., wraparound register key) --- which makes me think this maker either went out of business or was absorbed by another firm very early in the 20th century.

J. Gras Clarinet.

I have a J. Gras "A" clarinet. As a matter of fact I am at this minute practicing Shostakovich's "Overture Festive" for our Conroe Symphony concert in two weeks on this clarinet.

I am a retired electrical engineer(PE) and now a duffer musician. I usually play Selmer Bb clarinets and I also play a Malerne Bass Clarinet in symphony.
I inherited this Gras clarinet from my father 40 years ago. It is an unbelievably fine instrument. I do My own repairs. (I grew up in a music store in Iowa repairing band instruments when I was big enough to set at the bench).

This Gras clarinet has an beautifully balanced scale and responds great. I really hope that someday I can pass it on to a working symphony player that will use and appreciate it.

Tim:

This is a shot in the dark, but lets try:

I own an "A" clarinet with the exact markings you have on your Gras, i.e. "J.Gras SGDG" `clarinet.

We have a new 2nd clarinet player in our symphony that needs an "A" clarinet.

My Gras clarinet is a fine machine. My friend might be interested in purchasing your clarinet if it is still available and you do not need it.

Send me an E-Mail if you have any interest.

J Gras was established in 1868 and continued in business until the 1920s. Woodwind and Brasswind makers and dealers with factories at Lille and Paris and dealer operations in Lille, Paris and Brussels.
