I've played in wind quintets in the past and I'm curious -- what are some of your favorite chamber works? I'm quickly developing an interest in quintets, quartets, mixed ensembles, and other unique pairings (...groupings?).

Brahms Quintet (clarinet + string quartet)
Mozart Quintet (clarinet + string quartet)
Mozart Trio (cl, viola, piano)
Bartok Contrasts (cl, violin, piano)
Beethoven & Mozart Quintets for Piano & Winds (piano, ob, cl, bsn, hn)
Brahms Trio (clarinet, cello, piano)
There are more, but these are my faves...love 'em all!

These are not "standards" in the genre, but I must recommend the woodwind quintets by Theodor Blumer. He was German and I believe you would classify him as neo-Romantic.
I think he wrote 4 or 5 pieces for winds, but I especially liked the op. 52 quintet. He also wrote a nice piano sextet (pno & wwqt) on a Theme & Var, op. 45.
The Moran Quintet, I think, is the only group to have recorded Blumer's works for wind quintet.
Also: I'd appreciate anyone else's recommendations on other Romantic/Neo-Romantic type woodwind quintets! (besides Klughardt)

A little off the beaten path...
The Mihalovici Trio (Eb clarinet, A clarinet, Bb bass clarinet)
And a little more tried and true:
Milhaud trio (cl, vln, pn)
Beethoven trios op. 11 & ?? (trio arr. of septet).
And if you can find the numbers:

If you're into twentieth-century music, "Three Pieces" for flute, clarinet, and bassoon by Walter Piston is great, as is Hindemith's "Kleine Kammermusik" for wind quintet. However, be careful if you or anyone else in the group has more conservative musical tastes--for every person I know who enjoys these pieces, there's at least one who hates them with a passion.

tonight i performed the Mozart Quintet, a classic already mentioned above, and a duo for Viola and Clarinet by Rebecca Clarke ("Prelude, Allegro and Pastorale")... this has moments that hark back to the 19th century, and it's more "modern" moments are fairly tame by 20th century standards...
Another piece that i love to perform- Quartet by Peter Schikele. This piece seems to always win the audience, it's such a great piece!

Bruch 8 Pieces for Clarinet, Viola and Piano. Yummy- like chocolate.
The wind octets of Krommer- check out Sabine Meyer's recordings. Amazing.

My interest in chamber music has really increased in the last year or so. It seems like I'm finding it everywhere.
Was just inspired after hearing Milan Turkovic, David Shifrin, and Shai Wosner on Saint Paul Sunday: http://saintpaulsunday.publicradio.org/programs/557/
Last night I checked out the Villa-Lobos trio and Alec Wilder's Suite for Horn, Clarinet and Piano, but it looks like I'll be heading back to the library for much more. Thanks for the feedback!

There are a great many of my favorites already listed but I'd like to add Samuel Barber's Summer Music for Woodwind Quintet. Dvoraks Seranade is for a fairly large group. Tomorrow I'll think of another dozen, but I won't post all of them, but maybe one or two.

Krommer: Quintet for clarinet & strings. (I wish a score was published)
Prokofiev: Overture on Hebrew themes, for clarinet, string quartet & piano.
Brahms: Two songs, op. 91. Originally for alto voice, viola (or cello), and piano; the voice part will work on clarinet.
Thuille: Sextet for wind quinet and piano.

One work which I could stand to ignore for a few years is Gounod: Little symphony (scored for flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 horns, and 2 bassoons). Two possible alternatives are: Faure/Grovelez: Nocturne, and Donizetti: Sinfonia in Gm. I haven't had a chance to try these, but they look intriguing.
