In the earlier thread, the newer Soundblaster Live was referred to. Is it that much better than the Sound Blaster AWE64 which I have now? Right now the trumpets sound like the little tin toy ones sold years ago. The fiddles like strangled cats. Is this normal or is there something I'm not doing right?

The SoundBlaster Live supports four speakers instead of only two. If you have software that also supports four speakers, you get a great sound. Most older software doesn't know about the extra two speakers, so the sound is the same as the SoundBlaster AWE64.
Your trumpets should not sound tinny. It sounds as if your sound card software is not installed correctly. This happened to me when I had to reinstall Windows 95. There is a SoundBlaster driver built into Windows 95 which works, but sounds awful. When I reinstalled the drivers that came with the sound card, the sound improved immensely.

Eoin,
The AWE64 does not have the same upgrade capabilities that the SoundBlaster Live! series has. I changed over from the AWE64 and put the Live! in because the samples were pretty horrid.
There's a problem with just about all soundcards in their clarinet samples - vibrato is added automatically, etc., but with some judicious editing with the Vienna Soundfont editor you can make them better. Or sample yourself, of course!
