By the way, The Times has sent its reporter Dan Wakin with the Philharmonic on its Asian tour, largely because of the scheduled North Korea appearance. As regular readers of the Bboard will recall, Dan is himself a terrific clarinetist who, in 2004, wrote about sitting in with the Philharmonic for a performance of the Pathetique. Stanley Drucker's advice to him beforehand was, "Don't faint on stage." Of course, Dan did just fine.

Everybody is wearing heavy coats. The schools must be only weakly heated.

Okay I think that this post was probably made in honest good faith, but for some reason I just can't remove the slight smell of Western supremacy from it. Let's say the pictures were actually taken in New York and then there were also students wearing coats in them. I'd guess that your first response would probably be something along different lines?
You've probably never been to Shanghai within the last decade or two. It is most certainly not just some developing town. It is a bustling metropolis and one of the world's great modern cities, where standard of living is quite high.

I'm looking forward to read whatever accounts of the trip Dan Wakin will come forth with. His article on sitting in with the orchestra was a wonderful read to us curious folks that do not play in a top performing group.

Schools in Japan and many other countries in that general area do not have central heating. I taught a bit in Japan.
Central heating is considered a massive waste of energy.

In addition to the reporting, there's also a fairly active blogging (several times a day) of the NY Phil trip to Asia: http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/
Should get interesting in the next few days as they go through N. Korea.
