My teacher has been beggin me to retire my closed-faced mouthpiece in favor of on that is more open (i.e. Vandoren B40.) What is the reason for this?

Many teachers have their own preferences. I prefer a medium-to-medium opened mouthpiece because most of my students get a fuller, darker tone but it depends on the students. I have them try many different mouthpieces from closed to MO if they or I feel a need for a change. There's also more to a facing than just the tip opening. Many players sound great on closed facings, others on opened mouthpieces, it depends on your physical make up and preferences. My suggestion is to try some and see what happens. He-she, should tell you the reason for a change though. ESP

It also depends on the design of given model. I play on a mouthpiece with about 1.07mm opening and use Glotin GIII #3.5 reeds but I've tried two models both with about 0.98mm opening and on one of them I found myself wanting to use slightly stronger reeds but on the other I wanted to use at least 1/2 or even 1# lighter reeds. I've also tried 1.02mm opened mouthpiece and I liked the Glotin GIII #3.5 also on it.
