Leaving clarinet on stand ?
Author: Matt English
Date: 2000-08-18 21:41

I wanted to get you folks thoughts on leaving my
instrument on the stand when not playing it .
After practicing , is it OK to swab the instrument
and leave it assembled on the stand , or is this
opening the door for cracking , or other anomolies ?

Thanks in advance for the input .

Matt,
You might want to try the Search the Forum link. It's been discussed a number of times before.

If you swab out the excess water first, it should be all right. I WOULD be concerned about someone knocking it over though. That can get expencive.

I only keep a metal one in the pickup for short, quick practice sessions like lunch break, or waiting for the 100+ car trains that go through our town at 5mph. Used to put it in the gun rack (Have Clarinet-Will Travel) but the hot sun reset the pads.

All those rednecks couldn't figured out what you were hunting with a clarinet on a gun rack. Maybe it was an out of tune duck caller.

Gotta get me one of those Commando clarinets that Lelia wrote about a while back.

Leave it on the stand. Then you'll play it. Better to be played and then broken than not played.

Honestly, I do this sometimes--after cleaning my instrument out of course, and have never experienced any problems with cracking. But I only do this because my practice studio is under lock and key. Nor have I experienced problems with the tenon joints getting stuck. But I usually do this when I know that I will have minimal practice time, so it's nice to have your instrument handy to pick up. But I understand not everyone has this luxury. On the other hand, my joints are always well-greased and the temperature and humidity is relatively constant, now that I've solved the air conditioning problem.

I would never leave a wooden clarinet assembled after playing it for any substantial length of time. A lot of moisture collects in the joints from playing that swabbing does not remove. Take a look inside the top joint of your barrel after a playing session and ask yourself if you want the accumulated moisture sitting in your valuable instrument.

I leave my instruments on stands. I play flute and sax as well as clarinet. I swab them out after I'm done and put them on the stands when I'm done. I find that they're handy to grab and practice on that way...you don't have to haul them out of the boxes and put them away all the time. I've never had my clarinet swell up on me. I play it often enough during the week that it doesn't stay pegged for extended periods of time. My stands are in a corner where they're out of harm's way. The only thing I've noticed is my flute will tarnish faster setting out. Not a problem! :)

Mox-nix, if your horn(s) are housed in a relatively stable environment (temperature/humidity) and you practice good maintenance there should be no ill effects over the short term. Always, swab thoroughly including blowing out excess spit trapped in the upper joint tone holes and wipe each tenon joint clean. It might be a good idea to at least drape your swab over the horn to repel dust. Obviously, if you choose to place it on a stand when not playing keep it within eye-shot as a constant reminder to press forward and for inspiration. If I'm shedding long hours, mine will sit on the peg for more than a week, but usually never more than that because of gigs. Use common sense like anything else, store it in a safe place, and definitely spring for a well made, heavy duty stand/peg like a Blayman...those cheap, plastic pack a stand concoctions that fit in the bell are garbage and a disaster waiting to happen. <:-)
