I am going to the good 'ol music store to try out some clarinets for my birthday.
i was wondering if there was like a universal reed and reed thickness to use for trying out clarinets

If you're trying CLARINETS, then you should take the reeds and mouthpiece you use everyday.
You're already going to alter one big variable (the clarinet), so you don't want to change the other variables...otherwise you will not be able to accurately judge the instruments you play.
You should also bring several pieces of constrasting styel that you know well to explore the instruments.

Make sure to bring a tuner with you and if at all possible another set of good ears - teacher, fellow student if they have a good ear, etc.
It can help a lot. The other thing is (not that you will be trying out that many clarinets if the store is a typical local store) to not be afraid to walk out and give your ears a break if you play many instruments and get to the point of confusion.
A break can really help to clear the mind and start fresh again. Also bring paper and a pen to write down the serial number of what you like. It has happened before that a store has done a switch even by mistake from what you select to what you get.
