Last night I participated in a piece by Klaus Huber: “Lamentationes Jeremiah” for six singers, basset horn/bass clarinet, theorbo/guitar and various drums. It’s based on madrigals by Gesualdo and between the movements the originals were also performed with the same lyrics. It was a fantastic presentation with a mix of renaissance music and modernistic based on the very same theme.

The basset horn is a very good instrument to mix with singers. It seems like only Mozart knew this before Huber, maybe inspired by Mozart wrote this piece. The basset horn’s register corresponds perfectly with the human voice from F2 to C6 or even F6. It’s strange that there aren’t more pieces written for this combination of basset horn ad human voice.
