What are the clarinet professors of note that are in the West? I'm looking for someone that is more interested in chamber music and not so much in orchestral music. Someone that has an intimate relationship with their students, meaning they're not preoccupied with other interests outside their job or thinking about retirement, and teaches in a systematic, but personal approach.

Am I asking for too much?

There are a number of fine professors in the west, but I wouldn't recommend any based on your description. It sounds like more of a wish list than a realistic set of criteria. I think the best teachers are likely to have interests outside of their teaching job that on a day to day basis will seem like their primary focus. Whether or not you would consider this being preoccupied is your call.

Yehuda Gilad at USC is an amazing teacher. He treats each student as an individual and customizes his approach to exactly what each one wants and needs. All of his students play beautifully, and no two play the same. I've seen him in master classes and was blown away.

His classes are extremely difficult top get into, since everyone wants to study with him, but if you can qualify, there's no one better.
