I am having difficulty working out the difference between the instructions given for two sets of quavers. I'll describe the markings as well as give the names I know for clarity.
The first set of instructions is for a run of quavers and they all have dots and then upside down Vs all above the notes.
The next set is for another tun of quavers, but they all have side on Vs - big to little signs.
I assumed the side on Vs were a sort of emphasis sign, but how does this differ from the dot with a hat on. I thought that would be a staccato but I'm not sure about the hat on the top. As the two runs come immediately after each other I need to make a proper distinction between the types of quavers.

Hello D,
The second notation is for accented notes...which I recommend doing with air. This could be legato or marcato articulated, with emphasis on the beginning of each note.
The first notation is for the combination of accents and staccatos...creating a short punchy articulation with separation between each note.
Which piece?

It's Dances with Bears by Jim Parker. I'm playing it on the trombone though so I'm being a bit cheeky asking about it here! It's published in a book called Jazzed Up Too, I know there are editions about for other instruments so someone on here might have a copy around and can say what the directions are actually called.
Thanks for the help. I'll go and have another look at it with those instructions in mind. I think the danger I have is just to make the first ones short and the second ones longer - but that is not what is instructed so I need to work on a bit more detail.
It's actually a challenge set by my teacher. Of the he thinks I can play it and doubt it variety. I feel I need to try my best though. Would be great if he was proved right.
