 Crystal mouthpiece refacing

I got a Pomarico Sapphire a while ago. However since then I have been playing stock Vandoren 5RV and Selmer C80 120 and I am disappointed with the Pomarico for being stuffy and non-responsive. First thought was that refacing might help, however I could not find a refacer who would do crystal mouthpiece. After searching for a while I found old forum posts of 2003-2004 by David Spiegelthal who told he had done it. Tried to contact him through the mails indicated in forums but got constantly bounced back for some reason. Any idea how to find him, or perhaps another refacer? Many thanks!

Refacing a crystal mouthpiece is not that different but the risk is great. It's very easy to chip or break a crystal during refacing. I refaced many crystal mouthpieces that belonged to me but I would never do this for a customer because of the risk factor even though I never messed up a single crystal mouthpiece.

Hello,

The best crystal refacer I know is Manfredo Cavallini, in Rome, Italy. I'm having a bit of difficulty tracking his info down. If you want it, I can find it. Contact me directly. Good luck.

I bought two crystal refaced mouthpieces from Fred Rast. First one was a dream mouthpiece, and I shattered the tip a few weeks later. The second one was good, but not as good as the first. But I never played it because I play mainly outdoor marching gigs and the only indoor gigs I played were over tile/linolium floors. I was always afraid of dropping it. So I sold it.

But I'd give him an email. He's a bit expensive, but did good work on those.

AS it helps if YOU provide an email link in your profile as well. otherwise nobody can reach you to help your situation

I'm here, and I still reface crystal mouthpieces. I have never broken one in doing so. dspieg@earthlink.net

I have a crystal mouthpiece reafed by Dave Spiegelthal. It is refaced in a way that requires at least 4 strength reeds or probably better 4.5. Usually I don't like hard reeds but with this mouthpiece it feels very good and easy to play with a hard reed. I think Dave made it similar to how he prefers. It was done very good and I can recommend him. You might want to talk to him (or whoever you choose) about what you want and what strength reeds you want to work, etc.

I've had a couple of sop cl glass mps refaced/reclaimed {V W !} by Manfredo, a true expert IMHO, on back. Yes , TKS Ben, the check/mps are in the mail, I echo your recommendation, and Dave S refaced my two GG bass cl mps, which are my bests. If there are other "qualified" glass/crystal refacers, please speak up. My Pomarico 3 ALTO mp is also excellent as recieved. Not playing now due to breaking out a lower front tooth, need to stop chewing nails, I guess, take care ! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Thanks! I have been trying to email you to dspieg@earthlink.net but my mails have been constantly bounced back by earthlink server. No idea why. Do you have another email address? I found on internet an adddress belonging to David Spiegelthal at orbital.com but I was not sure it was you. Is it yours as well or that is another David's?

Thank you fellows for great information.

Ben, I found Manfredo Cavallini's homepage in the net. Since I am from Europe, Italy is good news because I hate to deal with customs which might be the case if I had to ship the mouthpiece to the US back and forth.

This in no way means any disrespect to David, I just want to keep it as simple as possibly. From my experience, customs and simplicity are often contradiction in terms. I still look forward to have a mouthpiece refaced by David, I have heard only good things about him. So, David, my question about an alternative email is still in effect.

Best regards to everone who replied, as well as to everyone who did not!

AS,

The email addresses you found for me are correct, I have no idea why they don't work. There's nobody else (in the world, as far as I know!) with the same name as mine. As for your decision to send your mouthpieces to Italy, I understand completely! I've personally experienced quite a few delays in shipments going overseas because of Customs.
