 Johnson H3-suggestions

My teacher just gave me a Johnson H3. What ligature/reed combination will work best? I want a dark tone that projects and is clear. Thanks,

WONderful mouthpiece.

I liked a Vandoren V12 #4 shaved down to balance the tip on mine.

If yours is like mine, it has an asymmetric facing - so a well balanced reed will play best. I also liked the Rigotti Gold reed, #3.5 with the tip trimmed.

I did NOT find it friendly to my Legere synthetic reed - go figure.

The maker of your mouthpiece, is something of a cranky genius.

I had one for a while and found that the asymmetrical facing was difficult for me to fit reeds to. Evenly balanced reeds did not work, as the two rails are different. I did find that I needed something that was pretty free and responsive, especially at the tip, as there is a little resistance built into this type of facing/mouthpiece. Ultimately, it was not the right set up for me.

I know some players who love them and sound great on them. Tom Martin in the BSO uses one and he is a fabulous player. You might consider contacting Dan Johnston and seeing what he suggests for reeds.

Tom Martin plays on a B45 for his Bb/A clarinets and a Johnston only on Eb.
