I'm guessing that the younger generation of clarinetists have no idea who "Leon" was [wink] ...GBK

Is this Leon Russianoff or Leon Lester or who? I don't know what these guys looked like but I know that their influence is profound. Thank you.

I'm pretty sure that is Leon Rusianoff. It's nice to put a face and a movie, no less, with the name. Are there more clips of him floating around?

Yup, it is - haven't seen any other Russianoff videos though.

Speaking of Lester, he was my high school teacher.

I can see why Russianoff would have been such an inspirational teacher. You can hear the enthusiasm and emotion in his voice. Whilst looking at this did anyone else see the Frost clip? Amazing improvisation.

That is definitely Leon Russianoff. I studied with him for three years at The Manhattan School of Music; wow it was good to see him. Almost bought tears to my eyes. He was such a great teacher because his enthusiasm ran over like a water falls. And I thought the best part of his teaching was that he didn't try to make his students clones. He was famous for his "bag" of mouthpieces that he collected in his store, "Banner Music". He would have us try mouthpieces until we found the one that made us sound the best, not the one that he used, even when he came out with his own. I changed MP at least four times in the three years I studied with him because we were both looking for what worked best for me. Even when I bought in a Portney mouthpiece, I was doing coaching with Portney at the National Orchestral Ass. in NY at the same time he came out with his new mouthpiece and he sold me one that he picked out, Leon welcomed it until months later when I wanted a darker tone, he agreed. That's the reason so many Russianoff students all sounded different and so many of his students because successful players and teachers. Thank you for that post, if brought back so many great memories. What a guy! ESP
