 good bass clarinet demo piece?
Author: Jaysne

I want to demonstrate the bass clarinet at my school (none of the kids has ever seen one), and I want it to be something that shows off the low end. Can someone recommend a short piece or excerpt? They're young kids, so I thought maybe something scary-sounding might be effective. And possibly well known, too.

You could play the cat's theme from Peter and the Wolf, not very difficult, but not very scary either.

The "donkey theme" from "On the Trail" (Grofe - Grand Canyon Suite) or the "Alfred Hitchcock theme" from Sorcerer's Apprentice ...GBK

The bass clarinet solo (which Larry Bocaner calls the "snake", I think) from Shostakovich's 6th Symphony.

Maybe some lines from R. Strauss' "Don Quixote"?

The bass clarinet solo from the slow section of "Blue Shades" by Frank Ticheli. Slow, bluesey, not too long, and shows off the entire range low to high.

Hey! I resent that last statement!

Maybe another of Shostakovich's: Folk Dances (First 4 lines, 2nd or 3rd clarinet). It spans 2 octaves, from lowest E to clarion E.

Richard Strauss "MacBeth", if you can find a part, has a great passage for bass clarinet. Very spooky -- starts chromatically from low E. I've used it myself for youth concert demos. Page 18 of the Strauss Orchestra Studies. Peters/also reprinted by International, I think.

Check out Eric Dolphy playing bass clarinet on "God Bless The Child" on YouTube.com. There used to be a free download of this version as sheet music somewhere on the internet, but I could not find it tonight. Perhaps someone else can help find it. Extremely difficult to play, but fun to see what he was doing!

personally, seeing as how it's young kids, I'd do the Pink Panther theme, as low-down on the horn as you can go. Or the Addams Family theme, ditto. Or the "Barney" theme, if you can stand to play THAT (and the kids would probably know it). It's kids, after all. Have fun!

The "Elephant" from Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals; transposed from the correct key it goes down to low C; I use this when doing clinics with elementary school kids to demonstrate the low notes of the bass clarinet and it's always a hit

Slightly off-topic as you may have to do your own arrangement - I think Jack Sparrow's theme from the 2nd Pirates of the Carribean would be a great showpiece for bass clarinet. The original is a cello feature.
