Last night I played Mahler 6th with San Francisco Symphony’s music director Michael Tilson-Thomas. It was a fantastic experience and the best Mahler 6 I’ve ever participated in. He started the program before intermission with a pre-concert-talk about Mahler and the history behind the work, his own ideas interpreting the work based on Mahler’s ideas and his own meeting with Alma Mahler as a ten year old boy in his godfather’s bookstore in L.A.
Michael Tilson-Thomas is the type of conductor that I love, who has a deep knowledge and dedication to his mission. His humble appearance before the orchestra and the score itself is also very attractive. Besides that he is a very good conductor.
I love his response from an interviewer regarding he’s choice of favourite composers: “You can't have Bach, Mozart and Beethoven as your favorite composers; they simply define what music is!”

Amazing! Thank you for telling that little story. Love the favorite composer quote. And Michael Tilson-Thomas' Mahler recordings are absolutely phenomenal...
Working with him must've been a thrill for you.

Fortunately the concert was recorded for later publishing on the web. I’ll put the link here as soon as it’s available.

Tilson-Thomas has become one of the top Mahler conductors and I've really enjoyed his released recordings. I can't wait to see the link for this concert.

His 7th with the LSO is stunning. I bought this as preparation for my first concert at the RCM playing principle with Andrew Litton.

The last of the televised 2007 BBC Proms concerts (or the penultimate Proms concert) was the SFSO/Tilson-Thomas doing Mahler 7.
As for Mahler 6, I do like the (unpredictable) horn solo in the slow movement - gets me choked every time I hear it (and the cor anglais solo has a low Bb - alright if the player has a German spec cor!). Though our last bandmaster (a horn player) said 'it's too Disney' - OUCH! I doubt neither Mahler nor Walt Disney would have been chuffed with that comment!
