How many of you take regularly scheduled clarinet lessons?
How many years did you take?
How long is each lesson?
How many years w/each teacher if you had more than one?
thanks!

Weekly 1-hour private. Weekly 3-hour group lesson: one of in a 1/2 hour private, while the other 4 did Cl4s. Three years, rapid progress.

Currently, in 3rd year, weekly, much detailed work. more sophisticated, but much slower progress. I'll stick with this teacher 'til he moves on to a better symphony job.

3rd year of playing or 3rd year of College?

Is the weekly 3 hour group part of a college setting?

Thanks for responses...please keep em coming.

I have been taking 1.5 hrs/wk (private) for 4 yrs.

I LOVE clarinet & taking lessons but asked to change to 1hr/wk. Teacher is not happy about it but said ok. He feels an hr is not long enough.

No teacher or lessons in the 13 months since I picked it back up after 32 years' layoff. My progress seems good sometimes, and other times I feel it is too slow. One tries to use one's ears as a guide - how is it coming out, and what's the difference between that and the way it should be? That's really the hard part - the solutions generally are fairly obvious after the right questions are asked.

At some level, players must already know most of the "how" to do things, and the more important questions are "what". I would think at that point they need not so much a teacher as a coach, or maybe a trainer, i.e., someone who can focus fully on hearing and observing and providing data (and maybe psyching up.) Even Tiger Woods has a coach.

Hi Philip, thanks.

I like the idea of a coach....I learned clarinet as a kid, did lots of performing/competing so knew some things when I started back after a 10 yr break.

I've worked hard in 4yrs & made a lot of progress and am performing again.

I don't want to quit my teacher. I just don't want to become so dependent on constant lessons that I never "grow up" musically. I'm not gettin' any younger!

Thanks, I'm feeling less guilty for asking for a 1hr lesson. Now it doesn't seem like such an unreasonable request.

I took about ten lessons here and there over the past 5 years. Before that I had two years of no playing at all, and before that I played in high school band.

However tomorrow I start what will hopefully be a long time of REGULAR lessons. Bi-monthly (or semi-weekly if you prefer to think of it that way).

At my high school, I try to get as many lessons as possible from my teacher. During the last four years of my high schooling, this was a forbidden practice. For instance, on my birthday, I had four hour long lessons! Also, because I also learn saxophone from the same teacher, my sax lessons might mysteriously turn into clarinet lessons...

Now that I am in my final two years at high school, my "free periods" luckily fall on the days that the clarinet teacher is "in", he does not know this yet, but I'm sure he'll notice the pattern soon : )

Anyway, to answer your questions:

I do take regular lessons. I think this is a very good move, and worth every cent.

I've had "weekly" lessons for over four years

each lesson would normally go for 50 minutes, However a few more minutes can usually be squeezed out.

My first teacher was a trumpet player that would mostly teach music basics, ie. rhythm and pitch. My current teacher could last me until he drops dead.

Even the very best players in the world would gladly take lessons (probably not regular) with teachers like Thea King* and Hans Deinzer.

Good questions!

From the end of 7th grade to HS graduation, every week one 1/2 hour lesson. (1972-77)

LOOOOOONG Break!

A few years ago, when I got back into it... 1 hour lesson every week for around 20+ weeks.

I should probably get back into the habit of a regular lesson.

Omega Klez...

I started the clarinet as a boy--group lessons in a pubilc elementary school, but gave up way too soon.

Now, in my 50's, I'm starting again. I have weekly private lessons that are supposed to last an hour but usually run longer--sometimes 90 minutes.

My teacher, a professional player, is affiliated with a local music conservatory, so we have lessons there and I pay by semester. I started Nov. 1, in the middle of the first semester. I'm booked for the second and we'll be making arrangements for the summer.

I expect to enroll again for the fall---and probably for much longer.

best thing i ever did. i practice for at least an hour--usually much more---each day. the progress, with a teacher, is amazing. but as anyone who reads this Bboard knows, there is never an end to the clarinet. and that's fine with me.

my typical student starts lessons in 6th grade, 30 minutes once a week. most of my high school students have been with me 5+ years, taking weekly lessons. my typical graduating senior is completing their 7th year with me when they go off to college.

the better ones keep taking during the summer months, 45 minutes a week during the summer. a few of the better ones see the 45 minute lessons turn into an hour or more during the summer, as i have more time when schools out.

a few unusual (very good) students take 45 minute long lessons every week.

one very talented student usually goes for about 2 hours each week before she announces that she's tired. she's been with me 5 years and rarely goes less than 75 minutes, but shes unusual, and i block off most of an afternoon for her.

most teachers where i'm located give 30 minute lessons, once per week, so that we can get enough of them in during the week to make enough to pay the bills. most of us have a few exceptional students who get longer lessons without extra charge.

Since age 7 to approx age 18 one hour private lesson once a week with the same teacher. From 7 to about 12 (highschool) also group theory lessons one hour once a week. Since 12 we had those in (music) highschool.

After that one year break where I had just a few lessons with a couple of teachers.

Then university, again one hour private lesson once a week. First year with one teacher, then change to different teacher for the rest of the years.

Since I finished university no lessons at all.

David,
In my first private lessons after public school, I studied with a very interesting guy: W. Russel Kline. He organized a youth band associated with his music studio in Sacramento, CA. I took weekly hours with him after high school, and joined his youth band.

The "best" (most willing, ...) 5 of us met at the studio every Saturday morning to play 4tets. One of us at a time spent 1/2 hour of the session with Russ for a private lesson. Thus, I had a 1-hour lesson and a 1/2 hour lesson --and occasionally, Russ would come in to the ensemble playing area to correct the terrible errors he could overhear from the private studio.

In addition to these 90mnutes _ + 2/12 hours of chamber work, we had 2-hour band practices every week. Later, I also played in 2 college bands and took students of my own --sort of standing in for Russ with some of his younger students --and being given 1 or 2 exceptionally diligent kids for a more rewarding teaching experience.

My 2nd year of college was interrupted by my Vietnam Era military service, and the horn was put away 'till I finished military, college, career.

Since retirement, I've become a near-full time music student. I drive the 180-mile round trip from here to Spokane each week for an hour lesson with the Spokane's Principal. This, of course takes all day, and 1/2 tank of gas and lunch money. On the road, I listen to Harold Wright, Stoltzman, et. al show me how to really play the repertoire work I'm trying to learn.

Additionally, I try to keep ww5, trios, duos going in my neighborhood.

Once a month for two hours as the commute is 3.5 hours each way. However, given both our travel and concert schedules sometimes a month or two gets skipped. As a kid I went 30 minutes a week for ~10 years and my teacher never gave me any extra free time.

Weekly for one hour. Began 5+ years ago (at age 68) with a local NJ music store teacher whose was primarily a flutist. She encouraged me to upgrade and a friend connected me with a professional. When we moved from NJ to Ohio, I was fortunate to connect with a first-rate symphony player who's also a very effective teacher.

Currently on a one-month sabbatical in Florida. Will continue daily practice with focus on Baermann and Rose.

I go about every three or four weeks, usually for 90+ minutes. Been doing that about 4 months. Previously, I didn' have lessons for 18 months. Previously, weekly for 1 hour, three years with same teacher, one year with a different one, during schoolyear only.

1/2 hour lessons weekly from grades 6-12, with a few different teachers. 1-hour weekly lessons first three years of college. 1-hour weekly lessons through a couple years of grad school. Off for a few years before going back to school for music degree (covered at end of first paragraph.)

Well, that was kind of complicated, wasn't it?

The last few months is the first time I've had lessons over an hour, and it's kind of nice...a lot gets covered, mostly orchestral excerpts, also learning a bit of Eb clarinet.
