 Mort Weiss

Have you folks who enjoy jazz clarinet been checking out Mort Weiss? I’ve been hearing about him for awhile and the article on him in the last issue of The Clarinet piqued my curiosity, so I bought several of his CDs and they’re all fantastic, especially the ones with Joey DeFrancesco on Hammond B3 organ.

Weiss was a tenor sax/clarinet player back in the bebop days but got out of music, and only several years ago returned to actively performing ( now exclusively on the clarinet) after a layoff of almost 40 years!

I would describe Weiss as basically a straight ahead bebopper. His sound is different…sort of a combination of Buddy DeFranco, Tony Scott and Jimmy Giuffre and once you hear it, you’ll recognize it. Check him out…I think you’ll enjoy him.
