High School Jazz Band Piece w/Clarinet
Author: Niente
Date:   2008-01-30 13:34

Here's the scoop. In all the years I've been in band and bothered my director to get some Jazz music w/ a clarinet part, he has not ever done so. Because of this, no clarinet players can get any experience in jazz music from our highschool, while most other instruments can, even a flute or two!

So, here's my question: could someone tell me a good high school level jazz band piece that has a part for one or more clarinetists?

Thanks bunches!!!

Niente.

Blue Shades (Frank Ticheli) is a concert band piece with a prominent 1st clarinet part that includes a jazz inspired solo cadenza at the end ...GBK

I personally do not consider Blue Shades a jazz cadenza but certainly fun to play.

Jazz band arrangements out there include several Benny Goodman tunes. "Let's Dance" is my favorite. "Sing, Sing, Sing" Part 1 is good, especially if you insert an extended improv solo in B minor near the end. Another Goodman tune is "Don't Be That Way". There is an arrangement of Artie Shaw's "Moonglow" as well as Glenn Miller's "Moonlight Serenade".

I had written "jazz inspired" cadenza.

Perhaps "blues inspired" would have even been clearer ...GBK

I really wish todays "jazz" bands would play a wider variety of genres. not just new jazz tunes, but big band tunes and latin etc.

seems like benny's music is only alive in the select swing clubs... shame...

If your school has already has a stage band/jazz band, tell your director to look at some of the many Goodman, Shaw, etc.. big band tunes which highlight clarinet so you can be the "guest soloist".

Or...perhaps he could let you play (on clarinet) any piece which has the tenor sax as a featured instrument.

If I remember correctly from my high school band director days, there is a Glen Miller medley for concert band which highlights the clarinet...GBK

Solo clarinet with jazz band? I'd go with Artie Shaw's Clarinet Concerto.

Jazz band with clarinet solo? I'd go with Leonard Berstein's Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs.

I second "Sing, Sing, Sing". Eddie Daniel's arrangement is very good, but I'm not sure how you would go about getting the sheet music.

Just my two cents...

If you want to play jazz, I would highly recommend learning to play saxophone, and doubling on clarinet while you play jazz. A traditional jazz band has five saxophone players, and each of them can double on clarinet and flute. My schools jazz bands are both set up this way, and there are several sax players that play clarinet in concert band. They double on clarinet whenever its necessary, and flute as well.

SVClarinet09: Is your jazz band doing essentially ellington this year as well?

The chart GBK is referring to is called "In the Miller Mood," and when our community band did it, the solo clarinet sat on the end of the sax row. The part has a nice melody line in the opening "Moonlight Serenade" section, (doubling either the 1st alto for 1st tenor, I forget), but I'm pretty sure the rest of the part is very similar to the 1st clarinet part -- plenty of rests!

David Sampson:
We've let the date on the NY Audition national tape thing slip up on us this year because we're focusing more on the Savannah Music Festival SwingFest and the Carolina Jazz Fest( sponsored by Essentially Ellington) Usually we go for it but this year has been a busy year for jazz band, REAL busy.

Do learn to play saxophone. I've learned to play it and I doubled early this year and still do whenever someone can't come in. Our flute player doubles on clarinet too.

GBK, you are right "Blue Shades" does feel a bit jazzy. I played through it today and it does have a Bernstein/Copland style of jazz feel to it. It is the band accompaniment that keeps it from feeling like you are playing a jazz inspired cadenza.

Artie Shaw Clarinet Concerto is another good one for Jazz Band and Solo Clarinet.

High School students can play it

Some of the charts in the "Essentially Ellington" series have parts for clarinet instead of one of the tenors: 'Concerto for Cootie', 'Pyramid', 'Across the tracks blues', 'Perdido', etc.

At least one of the several "authentic" Artie Shaw arrangements of 'Begin the beguine' has a separate clarinet part, as does at least one of several versions of 'String of pearls'.
