Hope this is not the wrong place to post this query but I am interested in locating a clarinet instructor in the Dallas, TX area. More precisely, Garland/Richardson/Plano. Still 62 years old and never a lesson in music.........don't even know what a chord is but I do copy morse code and math was my fvorite subject years ago. Someone told me if your good at math you should be good at music........does that add up?

Thanks ~ jerry

There's lots of us on this bulletin board that have technical jobs. I happen to be an engineer and our webmaster does computer systems. There are also several of us that are ham radio operators.

There have been quite a few people come to this board as beginning clarinetists later in life just as you have. And some of them have had no prior experience with music. From what I can tell, they are all having a ball. Just remember to have patience with yourself. It does take time and effort to learn to play any musical instrument.

Actually, when I taught guitar (not clarinet) one of my very best and favorite students was in his sixties. He had never had the opportunity to play music. He practiced EVERY DAY for two hours, faithfully. He was way better than the younger kids and young adults, because he practiced and desired to learn. He was a building inspector in the city I worked in. You'll do great. Do find a teacher, call local colleges, and music shops, if no one from Texas gets back to you.

There's a listing of clarinet teachers in the "Study" section of this web site.
