While looking on Amazon a few days ago I found this clip of Jack Brymer playing Eric Coates' 'Saxo Rhapsody' (scroll down for the sound clips):

Yesterday I heard the lot on the radio. Although he played with an archaic sound, I still admire what seems to be his effortless playing in general (listen to his recording of the Brahms 5tet), not to mention he takes it at a fair lick and does the whole lot in ten minutes.
What sax did he play? I'm thinking maybe a Selmer SBA or early MkVI.

Brymer was an amazing saxophonist. I think he played it even better than he played clarinet.
He made a recording of Walton's Facade with Cathy Berberian and Robert Tear in which he absolutely stole the show. He got such a smoochy sound and had so much presence that you couldn't listen to anyone else while he was playing. Thea King played clarinet and was left in the dust.
The Coates came out on an LP years ago, but I couldn't find a copy. I've been waiting for years for this to reappear.

I heard Brymer do the Saxo-Rhapsody live. It was stunning. He also played the Weber Concertino. It was disappointing. He seemed to have a natural way with the sax the eluded him sometimes on the clarinet.

It's hard to tell from the recording but I would lean towards a Selmer Mark VI with either an Selmer Airflow or an early Selmer Soloist. His tone concept is pretty rooted in the traditional French vein with a rather fast vibrato. The fast vibrato is what makes a lot of people think the playing is "old time" sounding along with what does sound like a larger chamber mouthpiece.
