Can anyone tell me about the Zimmer blanks for mouthpieces and the customizers who use them Gregory Smith and Charles Hawkins. How do they play? How do they feel? What kind of materials is in the Zimmer Blank. It seems that the Hawkins Mouthpieces run about 90.oo dollars cheaper than the Smith mouthpieces. Has anyone tried both of these and is it worth the extra 90.00 dollars for the Smith mouthpiece? If anyone has any feed back, I would appreciate it. Thanks

The blanks aren't the most costly part of the mouthpiece when you're talking about these kinds of customized mouthpieces. The hand labor and advice is what you're paying for.
My son owns one of each; both are excellent mouthpieces, but each has a different sound. Is the difference worth the price? Only you can decide - you'll have to try both in order to make your mind up.
BTW - it's Richard Hawkins, not Charles :^)

As was posted recently, the only patent I have found [so far][re;mp's]to ZiNNer is US 5,105,701, which has some dimensions on drawings and in the specification, as well as a review of mp history, well worth reading. It is viewable via the IBM and USPTO patent sites. Don

is the blank.I compare many mouthpieces and I find the Zinner is the best. In concrete terms,Zinner is Benz,Vandorens are Nissan. So to speak. The difference is the depth of the tone. You can easily recognaize it.

I use a mouthpiece that was made by hans viotto and it has the zinner blank .I too own a vandoren and I thought it was the best mouthpiece out there, but when I fist tried the mouthpiece with the zinner blank I was hooked. My advice to clarinetist out there is to go out and get a zinner moithpiece and you too will be hooked.

While Zinner makes fine blanks, remember that you're working with some fine handcrafted mouthpieces! A piece of Carrera marble is a wonderful piece of raw material, but it takes a Michelangelo to bring it to life.
