 Recording of Saint-Saens Sonata?
Author: Brenda 2017
Date:   2008-01-25 18:46

Here's a last resort - It appears that the internet isn't helping too much in my search for a recording of this sonata. I'd like to download only this one piece, some of these are $1.39 or $.99 per piece, but will purchase a CD if necessary. On previous posts some have mentioned that they liked Janet Hilton's interpretation of this piece, not as crazy fast as others have taken it.

Any ideas on where to purchase the recording?

I love this website:

arkivmusic.com

It has your recording for about nine dollars.

There are two nice recordings of this piece by Sabiene Meyer and Martin Frost. Both are available on ITUNES for like 3 dollars.

Frost has one on Itunes for $4 as well as Sabine Meyer. DePeyer has one too there (I heard it on satelite radio - not knowing who it was until afterwards and really didn't like it at all).

((( Ryan posted the above while I was looking them up at Itunes)))

Hilton and Johnson on itunes I don't like.

Although I haven't listened to any of the performances, there are a few versions of the piece (for free) on You Tube.

No guarantees, as the ability of the players could be questionable.

Certainly worth checking out...GBK

Thanks to all for the fast response.

Arkivmusic.com has over 20 players listed. Too bad we can't hear samples to see if we want to buy the CDs. Based on comments above perhaps Harold Wright or Stolzman would be fair choices - others are probably good too, we just can't tell. (now if they'd only accept a 6-digit postal code, grumble!) I don't have an i-pod yet so that doesn't help...yet.

I have the CD Romance by Stoltzman and although I have grown to like his recordings, this is one is by far my least favorite.

I like this recording:
Musique Française pour clarinette et piano
Ronald Van Spaendonck cl
Alexandre Tharaud piano

My personal favorite recording of the Saint-Saens Sonata is Martin Frost's.

His CD on which this piece is found, also has other regularly sought after clarinet literature, that is: Debussy's "Premier Rhapsody" and the Poulenc Sonata.

Roland Pontinen is an amazing accompanist also.

I recommend these recordings whole heartedly.

- Liam

Karl Leister has a recording of this piece on Par Excellence. You can also go to Borders.com and listen to clips there.

Brenda's initial post indicated that she wasn't interested in someone crazy fast...and so I didn't mention Morales'.

It doesn't sound fast...until you try to play along!

After checking around I took Sylvain's suggestion and looked up Ronald Van Spaendonck and Alexandre Tharand playing this piece. There are sound snips offered on the web site. I much preferred Ronald's interpretation over the much faster recordings. The first movement is flowing and lyrical the way I had imagined it to be. Then the second and fourth movements are sprite and sparkly to contrast the 'lento' third movement.

Too bad Canadian sites don't take the hint yet that the exchange is just about at par...The U.S. site of the same company was less expensive, including the higher postage, than buying within Canada. Pity! (Auto manufacturers finally got the hint and this past week are advertising adjusted prices.)

Again, thanks for all the useful ideas. I hope that this thread caused some to pull out their own copies of this wonderful piece.

Just as a footnote, the Morales recording is absolutely amazing. It would definately be worth taking a listen, if not purchasing it. Not only is the recording of the Saint-Saens great, the other pieces are fantastic. If you like the Saint-Saens sonata this CD is great. It's all french clarinet music written around or after 1900.

I like the Paul Meyer recording...but the first movement is too fast in my opinion.

Ricardo's recording of it is wonderful. He took a REALLY long time in releasing that recording (more than 2 years) as he wanted that album to be perfect. (per owner of Boston Records - rest his soul)
