Yikes, I got tapped to play the first clarinet part for our community production. I'm pretty excited about it and will try not to be too intimidated by all the sharp keys — for some reason I'm more comfortable with multiple sharps than multiple flats (probably from jamming with guitar bands).
Anyone have experience with performing this musical? What are the enjoyable parts? the hideous parts? the fun parts?

I did a three week run of South Pacific last summer.
I played Reed 3 which is clarinet only.
I don't specifically remember any sections that challenged me and by the 2nd week I was pretty much playing it "on automatic pilot"
Many of the tunes venture into the more difficult key signatures, and you may have to write in an occasional left or right to remind you of the pinky switches.
Have fun - lots of memorable tunes...GBK

HAH..."lots of memorable tunes"...that's being kind!
It's like eight tunes and 37 reprises!!
I remember there was one set of sixteenth note passages alternated between first and second clarinet in the second act that were awkward...was it "Happy Talk"?

Nah...there's a least 12 tunes, but you are right about the reprises.
I also remember that the 2 different acts are unbalanced, with the bulk of the playing being in the first act and a lot of down time (and fewer tunes) in the 2nd act...GBK

Alas, I couldn't get away with my exaggeration.
I do concur about it being unbalanced though,

I sang and in the chorus for our community theatre production, please don't try to imagine. Great show with some wonderful Rodgers and Hammerstein numbers.

I remember playing that part when i played the musical a few years back. The only problem was that there was no 2nd clarinet to alternate with in our production...
Aside from that, I don't remember the part being too difficult... very fun to play though!
