 Selmer series 9 eefer

I'm interested in buying an Eb clarinet and have found a 1970s series 9 for about $1k. Just wondering what anyone knows about this instrument? It's in good condition though I can't play it before buying. Would it be worth the risk? Is that a decent price? I don't think they make them any more as I can't find a new price for comparison.

Would be grateful for any advice. Thanks.

I think it's definitely worth the risk (though see if you can get the price down a bit) - personally I wouldn't mind a Series 9 Eb myself.

The current equivalent is the 10SII Eb, so insure it for the same price as one of these (though the Series 9 is the better instrument).

Thanks Chris P. It's useful to get the opinion of people with more experience in this area! I haven't been able to find a Selmer 10S II Eb online for comparison either - do you know where I might look?

Not sure I can get the price down, but I'll definitely think about it.

Thanks again - and any other opinions welcome!

That was a nice horn. I had one during the 70's and 80's and liked it. It has a big sound and is pretty well in tune with itself for an Eefer.

I would say something like $800 might be more in order for an instrument of that age. I sold a much newer Buffet R13 than that Selmer for $1200 five years ago. Admittedly that was a REAL DEAL.

I have a Series 9 Eb from the early 60's that I bought a number of years ago. I use a Clark Fobes barrel and mouthpiece on it that work great. The 43 mm barrel matches my instrument really well.

I think it is a really good Eb. It has a nice fat sound. It is very comfortable to play throughout the range. The rings are perhaps a little bigger than some Buffets and are more comfortable in the hands. The tuning is very good. I originally had a slight issue with sharpness in the upper left hand notes (high a, b, c) and did a little work to the tone holes to lower them. If you had this problem a little bit of tape would likely solve it.

It would likely be a very good to excellent instrument. If you could get the price down a little it might be even better. If not, I would probably still take it.

My primary Eb clarinet is a 1966 (U5xxx) Selmer Series 9 (even though I have a perfectly fine R13 Eb clarinet)

I prefer the hand position of the Selmer, as it does not feel as cramped as the Buffet. I also like their placement of the right hand sliver (banana) key. It is small, stubby and close to the key rod, where it can not be bumped and opened accidentally.

The tuning with the standard issue barrel is excellent...GBK

Thanks everyone for your input. I think I'm going to go for it.

I only recently came across this site but I think it's great! Will definitely be back and I hope to be able to help other people out too.
