This may be an old topic on here but I was looking for some opinions on reeds, particularly Vandoren. In around 15 years of playing the clarinet I have used Vandoren almost exclusively, starting with blue box working up to 3.5, then silver box the same strength which seemed better. Recently I have been experimenting with the Rue Lepic 56 category 3.5+, and while initially they gave a fuller sound, I have found they wear out very quickly indeed, and seemed quite inflexible compared to the silver box ones (for something like the Premiere Rhapsody for example). I am considering trying blue box 4 strength or the same silver box. I guess the mouthpiece and ligature have a part in it as well, and I use the D Hite mouthpiece and Rovner ligature.
It's always personal preference in the end, but what have others found with various types of reed?

I have stuck religously tho Vandoren Blue Box 3.5, but I have found them to inconsistent recently, even the two boxes I bought when I was in Geneva last Oct. I also play on a Hite which i've had and played on for 6 years i think. I change between ligatures and feel that changing ligatures doesn't affect the reed so much. I don't think i'll ever change my reeds as i did all that changing while at school. I tried the V12s and others but found the blue box better for me. I tried the Rue Lepic when they came out and wasn't so impressed, tho i have to say they did work well on the basset horn.
Again it's personal preference.

Yes, there will be many threads on this in the archives!
Personally I always carry Vandoren blue with me. Even if I'm set on another brand they are always a good standby. Presently I find strength 3 work well on B46.

I try to stick with the same Vandoren reeds, but the boxes and packaging keep changing.
First, the nice purple plastic boxes, then the even nicer purple cardboard, slide out box, then blue boxes.
So I switched to silver boxes (or maybe gray or grey?), then they suddenly grew big with more plastic and now shiny silver foil to maintain the same humidity as the factory.
I'm not sure what I'm playing on now.
In the end, though, they all end up in a big black circular container (some sooner than others).

Some of the issue has to do with personal preference (sound, feel) and the style of mouthpiece you use. Some mouthpieces work better with the traditionals, some the V12. I like both. I think that the traditional cut has perhaps a bit more "ring" in the sound. I also find that perhaps they last slightly longer. It may be due to a little difference in the density of the cane used.
I have found some success with the Rue LePic, but have not used them enough to really settle in with them and see what to do to adjust best them for me.
