A rare Benny Goodman rehearsal clip

A rehearsal clip of "Avalon" for the 1973 Goodman quartet reunion concert:

Sadly, Gene Krupa died in October of that year.

And if you've never seen it before, the actual concert performance of "Avalon"

Interesting to compare the rehearsal to the concert...

Thanks again, Glenn. I've seen a few BG clips now and wonder: did he rotate the ligature on the mp or did he rotate the mp??

BG's playing is just as fresh today (as is Paul Desmond's and Chet Baker's).

Here's another clip of "Sing, Sing, Sing", but watch for the second number where the quintet really rocks.

BTW--In the Avalon clip, Doc clearly introduces Krupa, Hampton, Wilson and Goodman, but makes no mention of the bass player, or if he did, I missed it. And (picky me) wouldn't that technically make it a quintet rather than a "quartet" reunion?? I know, the ORIGINAL quartet, but still............

Bob -

BG rotated the ligature, so that only two horizontal strips touched the reed. He learned this from Reginald Kell, who always set the ligature that way.

Thanks Ken! I was wondering if anyone knew why he did that and was getting ready to do a search.

Looks like BG grew his mutton chops longer in the time between the rehearsal and the performance. Must have had a few days lapse.

Doc Severinson was already wearing his wild clothes. Mod Squad take note.

That was fantastic. Did I hear a few bars of the intro to the High Society solo at the very beginning?

Yes, the first bar of the boilerplate solo to High Society ... but what would REALLY impress is if he ripped through the opening riff to the Martino. Of course, the composer would've likely been consulted and asked to re-write it so Benny could get all the notes out. [tongue]
