 Aspiring jazzers

Today I've had occasion to refresh my memories of Joe Marsala's playing. For all those clarinetists aspiring to attempt jazz but feeling intimidated by the pyrotecnics of Buddy DeFranco, Eddie Daniels, Ron Odrich, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, et al, I suggest listening to Marsala's mellow and melodic renditions. He reminds me of Bobby Hackett on cornet. Marsala's wife was unusual, too, in being able to make a harp swing. Bill Gamble

There was a nice article in "The Clarinet" on Marsala an issue or two ago. An interesting guy who played with the greats.

Hello,

Another great player that is somewhat overlooked and didn't play a lot of notes was Jimmy Giuffre. Artie Shaw is my favorite jazz clarinetist of all time, followed by Art Pepper (very few recordings of him on clarinet), then Giuffre, then Al Galladoro.

Hello,

I had no idea that Paul Horn played clarinet. Do you have recordings? The new age thing is not something I particularly like, but I assume when you say "early Paul Horn", you mean something before the new age direction.

Paul Horn play clarinet in the Something Blue song of the same name album
