My parents have recently bought me a new wooden clarinet. I live in the Phoenix area, where it is very dry. How often would you recommend oiling it? I would appreciate it if you would email as soon as possible and I thank you for your time! Thank you again!

It depends on what kind of clarinet you have and who you ask. I recommend calling several repair shops and asking their woodwind guy's opinion.

If you have a Buffet, they dont reccomend you ever oil it. I dont oil my newer buffet, but I oil my older one. I do that once or twice a year though...not a month. Its not as dry here in NY, but I think that once a month might be excessive.

I don't know, Dee. Probably you're right once a month is too much but then again, desert dry is like nothing else. I'd definately talk to the repair guys that live and work in that environment all the time.

0% humidity is the same whether it comes from being in the desert or just from turning on the heat in the winter. And I know it is 0% because I bought a hygrometer just to see how bad it gets. Here in South Dakota, homes ARE deserts once you turn on that furnace. My local tech recommends about four times a year with the fall and mid winter being the most crucial.
I fight a constant battle with dryness here. I have tried every suggestion in the book to keep my horns humidified and the air sucks up the water so fast that even in a closed case, the horns don't seem to benefit. Rings loosen in the winter and tighten again in the spring. I end up just keeping my fingers crossed that my horns are old enough to be well seasoned and that there are no hidden flaws that might make them prone to cracking.

My sister-in-law just got a viola case with a hygrometer built inside. It might be a good idea for our cases to stash one inside so you can still be confused as to when to oil.
