While rummaging around in the basement recently, I found a box that I didn't recognize. Upon opening it, I found my student flute and early 60s R13 clarinet that I thought had been lost when I moved eleven years ago. Interestingly, the silver flute was pristine, but the clarinet was ratty. I think this is due to the clarinet case not sealing well as well as disintegration of 40 year old foam in the outer case.
The last time I played was in the 80s and I couldn't remember exactly what I had, so imagine my pleasant surprise to find a near mint Kaspar mouthpiece! I had studied with the Principal of the Columbus Symphony during high school back in the 60s and he obviously knew what he was doing even if I didn't. As an added bonus, I found an excellent condition full Boehm Selmer Cenetered tone that had been left in one of my previous houses by a predecessor. As Forrest Clarigump said, life is like a box of instruments.
I remembered the great fondness Dave Spiegelthal has for restoring ratty old horns, so I contacted him about bringing my R13 back from it's sad shape. I sent the whole box off to Dave a couple of weeks ago and it arrived back today. Wow, what a difference. The horn looks and plays like new...maybe better. Dave did an absolutely great job.
Now I have to figure out what i'm going to do with the Festival and Yamaha flute I bought as replacements 7 years ago. Uh oh..I hear Dave's voice coming out of the old R13 case: "It's the start of your collection"
