I got an email last year from a guy in Queensland who had an old clarinet that he though I might like a look at. Usually I don't go for older horns but I had been toying with the idea of getting an old Buffet to play at my debut in NY this year.
My greenline is fine but it just doesn't have the wooden sound I want for this gig. Anyway to cut a very long story short-This guy, Nev, sent the clarinet to me in its original box, all tattered and torn etc . I immediately though "Hello, this is going to be a short visit". When I blew her however she was so big and free blowing. Even in the sorry state that she was in she played nicely. The barrel is a bit short however and the octave key is fractured. I bought her (literally for a song- ie, 2 signed CDs and some cash). The serial number is in the early 700s.
I've sent it to "my" fav. repairer, Mike Lomax and he's working his magic on it as we speak. My question is however, does anyone have any idea of the era of this horn? I think from memory the serial was 726 or something? I don't even know what the model is called-a Buffet Crampon I guess?
Sorry for asking this, what with being an endorsee and all, but I just love Buffet clarinets, so I endorse and play them. I don't really know all that much about the early ones though-if, in fact it is an early one.
Any info on this clarinet would be most appreciated. Mike and I have called her
"Old Sweetie" until we know more about her.
Cheers!
Andy
