Accolades for him in Ballet Theater Orchestra of several years ago, and new CD, HMU 907430, Brahms' Clarinet Sonatas. Super review for one of the best.

Apparently, there was recently an interview with Jon Manasse and Jon Nakamatsu on NPR, during which they perform the last two movements of the Weber Grand Duo Concertante and two of four rags by John Novacek. It's really a must-listen; an amazing performance by both musicians.

By the way, anyone know if the "Four Rags for Two Jons" have been published?

As I recall from the concert from which it was premiered, the Four Rags are originally for Violin and Piano...Manasse had it arranged (by Novacek) for clarinet.

So maybe it has been published in originial form.

The 2-part Performance Today podcast is required listening for both the interview and the playing. The Novacek Rags were amazing, the Weber Grand Duo (mvt. 2-3) was even better and the Ravel Piece en Forme de Habanera was the best of all.

I had mixed feelings about the Brahms Sonata #1 (mvt. 3-4). It was beautifully done, but VERY laid back -- even subdued -- probably because they were playing right into the microphone. It wouldn't work at all as a live performance from a stage, and I wanted more passion.

Jon has played at Strings in the Mountains music festival(Steamboat Springs,Co) for a couple of years and did these pieces last summer. They did a Q & A before the show and said the story on the rags is that the violin arrangement was played with the composer at the piano from memory. It took some prodding to get him to write out the part. The performance was a crowd pleaser and will be a welcome addition when published.
