 Repertoire for Woodwind Trio
Author: tdinap

Unfortunately, two of the members of my woodwind quintet here at school have decided not to play this term, so we are left with the relatively uncommon combination of flute, clarinet, and bassoon. Anyone know of any good pieces written for this ensemble?

I only know of "Three Pieces" by Walter Piston, and a transcription of a Beethoven trio (Op. 87), both of which we played last year when in this situation. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There's a nice Trio by Charles Koechlin for that combination, published by Salabert.

Did you check the woodwind.org composition database?

I have a fugue (2-3 min) I could easily arrange for that instrumentation. You'd have the East Coast Premiere. Send me an email if interested.

You could try Beethoven's arrangement of Mozart's beautiful aria, La ci darem la mano, for this combination.

At least it's ascribed to Beethoven, and I don't think there's too much arguement about it.

It is (or was) available in a Musica Rara edition.

It had just performed it a few months ago and totally forgot about it.

(maybe it is forgetable? [wink] )

My copy, bought more than 20 years ago ($3.50) , is Musica Rara #1187, with a big sticker on the cover which says "Distributed in the US and Canada by Rubank, Inc ...GBK

Devienne wrote a group of wonderful trios for fl/cl/bssn. Play and ad lib (Quantz that there has to be room in the trio for added notes!)

If you are interested in arrangements of well-known classics, try Penmark Music, via June Emerson Wind Music (Ampleforth, North Yorkshire).

Well, it turns out the professor who runs the chamber music program seems to like the idea of choosing the music for us himself, so I may not end up with as much choice as I expected. It's good to know what's out there for the future, though. Thanks for the input, everyone!
