Mark, do you have any "Clarinet Pages" T-shirts or ID tags made up yet ... so we can find each other while we're at ClarinetFest in Kansas City?
We're starting to make our plans to be there. Probably accommodations would be at a premium in July.

On a similar topic, I'll be moving to Missouri in May, and haven't yet bought an entrance ticket or reserved a hotel. Am I outta luck or will it be dificult? This will be my second clarinet gathering, my FIRST clarinetfest. The reason I haven't made any commitments is because I'm moving to a new military base as a part of the band and it's the fourth of july weekend. One way or other, I'll make it there, even if I have to drive there back and forth every day, but I'm hesitant to commit to a four day or three day thing without knowing what days I'll have off that weekend.

It's early days yet, Alexi. I expect that dorm rooms at UMKC will be available for around $50-$60/night. Driving to and from every day would be a challenge, assuming you're going to be stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood. According to my Streets & Trips, it would be around 250 miles and 5 hours each way. Part of the problem is that there really isn't a direct route. They don't call it Ft. Lost-in-the-Woods for nothing. Actually, it's quite a bit easier to get there from Ft. Riley. (About 125 miles and 2 hours each way). Pack a tent, fella!

I know the festival will be in Porto in Portugal next year but why can't we have something like this every year in Europe :(
5-6 hour flight from Iceland to USA is like 3 times more expensive than 3-4 hour flight to Europe and it's just because there is only one Airline flying to USA that is Icelandair but two Airlines to Europe. I was checking for a flight from Iceland to Mineapolis around the Clarinet festival and the cheapest ticket was around 900$ so that trip would cost at least 1500$ and that's way too much for me.
Then there is another problem for me. I'm born in Mineapolis and that makes me a American citizen so I need an American passport. I have to applay for an American passport at the American embassy at least month in advance and go there two times. Once to applay and once to pick it up. And the American embassy here in Iceland has very strict security and it has had a big "fight" with the neigbours in next houses through the years. And the worst part is the passport in only vailed for a year and costs around 100$
So BIG :( for me.

Emily's Dad, There's a lot of information about the 2007 Vancouver ClarinetFest events in the December issue of "The Clarinet". This got me to thinking about this next one, especially since I ended up not being able to attend last year, and a friend of mine DID go and had his picture taken with Richard Stoltzman, another close and personal friend of his... sigh.
BTW, Iceland Clarinet - being a dual citizen confounds the US customs officials, they'd give me some funny looks all these years when I'd cross the border to visit family. But for a long time we US-born people are allowed to have dual citizenship. So you may find it easier to get a passport from Iceland, assuming you're a citizen there, of course. And in case you want to go the US passport route, as Mark said the US passports are valid for 10 years, a bummer for us Canadians who have to go through the routine every 5 years.
In any case, ClarinetFest locations move around to accommodate people. If it were always in Europe, many of us wouldn't be able to travel there.

Iceland Clarinet, I don't know if they still check but if you apply for a US passport while living in a foreign country you better have been filing your US income taxes. They used to check and if you haven't, won't give it to you. Further unless there is a tax treaty between the US and Iceland you are obligated to pay US Social Security taxes as if you were self employed. Only missionaries and employees of foreign governments used to be exempt from SS taxes.

Thanks for the link. In my ever expanding knowledge of available clarinet resources (thanks to the BB), I have now registered Emily on the ICA website, and look forward to receiving our first Clarinet magazine. Hopefully come July we will wind up in KC (one of our favorite cities.)

Hmmm bill28099 when I was 14 years old I went to Mineapolis and to USA for the first and only time with my parents to see were I was born and such. I had to apply for a passport at the USA embassy here in Iceland month in advance. This was 10 years ago so I don't know what you are talking about.
And I'm 100% sure that the passport I got 10 years ago was only vailed for 1 year.

Having dealt with passports for the last 30 years since my wife is a foreign national and my children can be dual-citizens ...
Your passport at that time might have been valid for 5 years (children's passports) unless it was an emergency passport (1 year - only issued under extraordinary circumstancas such as loss when overseas), but we all know you haven't checked the current rules anyway.

Hey all! I haven't posted on here in at least a year. Well, I'm a sophomore clarinet student at UMKC. I would advise you all when more information comes out, to book a dorm room if/when they are available. People would be accomodated in the Oak Street dorms and they are really nice and a very short walk to the Performing Arts Center and Student Union. I'm not exactly sure about the hotels around the Plaza and how fast they book.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I saw in The Clarinet that it'd be held at UMKC and Unity Temple on the Plaza. If that is the case, just wanted to let people know that those two are about a 20 minute walk from each other in high traffic areas. Like most events, there should be some form of transportation to and from, but I just wanted to warn people about the walk.
I don't have many answers right now and don't want to start rumors, but I wanted to let you know that I'll be working the Fest in some form or fashion and I hope to see you all there!

Iceland, you can get the current rules at http://www.state.gov/travel and then do what is necessary to get a permanent passport from the State Department, so you can travel more easily into the US if you need to. Currently, passports for US citizens are valid for ten years.

I'm wondering if you're not talking about a long-term visa...that is almost exactly what it sounds like - I know Iceland doesn't currently require a visa but 10 years ago they might have.
Or you could be talking about some weird kind of passport...

Back to the T shirts or other ID as BB members: Mark, I tried to find your link to the Woodwind.org logo and your suggestion to see what we could do with this ourselves. Couldn't find it, so this thread will have to do.
Anyway I downloaded the logo as you suggested and had one of our local shops prepare a button for me. It was only $2.99 plus tax and it was done the next day. Not bad! I thought of having a couple of T shirts made, but a button can be put on any shirt alongside the ClarinetFest ID tag.
