I received a barrel with the familiar Selmer estucheon (wreath) and the imprint MADE IN FRANCE just near the bottom ring. The barrel is obviously old, and it has been "re-crayoned" to restore the printing (why?). I'm hoping for an older barrel because that's what I need.
I compared it with barrels for K series, M series, N series, and P series Selmer clarinets. In general, it seems to have a slightly narrower exit bore (pinky finger test) than any, so I am thinking it is post-Series 9 (which, if Series 9, would have that "9" imprinted on it).
Does anyone out there with a Series 10 or later Selmer have a barrel with "MADE IN FRANCE" imprinted? Any other clues?
(Please, no flames from the "if it works, just use it anyway" hawks. It's interesting to me to find out how old this might be.)
Thx.
Bill.

My early CT barrels all have 'Made in France' stamped lightly on the front just above the lower socket ring.

I recently purchased a Selmer wood barrel. Nowhere does it say "made in France". Within the wreath, above it says "Henri", below it says Paris and through the middle in CAPS extending through both sides of the wreath it says "SELMER"
Below the wreath it says "10". Haven't put the calipers on it yet but I believe it is 66mm. It works perfectly with my Signet Special.

Neither of my Series 9 barrels have 'Made in France' on them - the later 67mm one having '9' below the logo, the earlier 68mm one having a star below the logo - presumably as it's for a 9*, but it does it's job.

Warning: Unverified speculation follows.
I believe Selmer made clarinets for the European market that were not marked B.T., Centered Tone, Series 9, etc. The only gilded markings on these instruments were the wreath symbol with the addition of "Depose" (whose meaning has been discussed before on this board) above and "France" below the wreath on the upper joint. I don't know when they stopped producing Bb and A instruments in this line but I remember a story in "The Clarinet" magazine about someone who brought one (or a pair) back from France when he came home from WWII. Selmer appears to have continued this "line" for their harmony clarinets for some time after they stopped making Bb and A models -- probably because they made too few to warrant a model retooling. I have a Selmer C clarinet from 1978 with these markings and have seen similarly marked eefers of the same vintage on eBay. The barrel markings on my C are exactly as you describe on your barrel. My guess is that your barrel is from this line, which would likely make it an older one -- probably pre-Series 9 if memory serves.
Best regards,
jnk

That's really interesting Jack. I've done a lot of Selmer-watching, and the only unmarked instruments I've seen are the "N series" design, some of which had M serial numbers (I have one). HOWEVER, I have the vaguest memory of being in Jack Silver's basement and seeing a Q-series Selmer (Bb) with no model marking.
