Amati Kraslice makes mopani wood professional model clarinets. They are even slightly more expensive then corresponding grenadilla wood models.
Anyone knows anything about it?

Mopani appears to be a very viable instrument wood for woodwinds. The availability is greater than for Grenadilla but with any natural resource it must be managed well for continued availability. Mopani wood clarinets have a lighter brown to redish orange appearance coming from the factory and age to a darker brown with orange highlights. The only problem, a cosmetic one to be sure, is that since pieces of the instrument come from different billets from different trees they tend to age to different colorations of darker to darkest brown with orange hues. These different colorations are quite visible in an aged instrument but do not seem to affect the instrument performance.

Isn't Mopani at least a distant relative of our usual Grenadilla/African Blackwood ?? Will look for info, and am interested in its density, does it sink or float in water , [sp.gr. 1.0], IF density is a factor in "darkness" ?? Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Mopani is a very dense oily wood much like Grenadilla that has a density greater than 1.0 It seems (I do not run the machines but get this second hand) to machine like Grenadilla. The coloration has nothing to do with the density like the lighter "pulp" outer wood associated with Grenadilla.

TKS, Omar, I was sure you would know. I had a 1920's Selmer FB [Model 25 I believe, right? Debbi?], now at NMM-Vermillion, which had colorations of light brown to ?orange?, always wondered about it. Isn't it a quite common practice to stain "colored" Grenadilla to our usual black ? Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Color description would apply to a Yamaha I saw some 20 years ago. I was astonished to see it.
