I don't know at all where to breathe (beginning solo) in Symphony No. 9, Shostakovich, Mvt. III. Suggestions?
I also am having difficulty making it on the second phrase of the solo in the first movement of Brahms 3. (Phrase 2 beginning at mm. 40). I always run completely out of steam 1-2 bars before C. I see that on Larry Comb's orchestral disc he just does the whole thing with that one breath at mm. 40. Should I just suck it up and try and make it work, or is there a safe spot to fall back on?
I don't have any orchestral help books or anything, I just use the original parts. Also, I am recording these for a mock audition tape and will not be seeing my instructor before it is due, so I thought I'd ask you guys instead.

On the Shostakovich I do those first 16 bars in 1 breath. It's fast enough to make it. I think it's much harder to try and squeeze a breath in somewhere!
Don't have the Brahms in front of me, and I don't recall off hand...

The Shostakovich 9 solo in the 3rd movement should be done in one breath. Not difficult to do, especially if the tempo is closer to Presto.
For the Brahms 3 solo in the 1st movement starting at the 9/4, the best place for a breath is after the C5 (the 1st note in measure 40). At that time the oboe takes over the melodic line and the clarinet and bassoon play the counter melody.

Ya, Shosta 9 you can't breathe first 16 bars. I'm having the same issue with that piece, but found that I can get through it maybe half the time at quarter=126 after much metronomic practicing. This a recorded audition I'm doing, so I'll just record takes until I get a good one. On a job in a performance, you might be able to leave out one or two eigth notes, since it is played with other woodwinds, if I recall.
For Brahms 3, breathe after the C on beat one of the 5th bar in the 9/4. Probably the same place GBK said.
The reeds and the breath control gotta be just right for this kind of stuff. Have fun!
