 Clarinet performer-composers
Author: smithy
Date:   2008-01-08 05:23

Hi all,

I’m a Master of Music student studying the work of Brigid Burke, an Australian clarinettist, composer and visual artist. I’m interested in looking at other clarinettist performer-composers from any country who have been active since 1950. If you can suggest names of clarinettists who are also composers, particularly those who compose for the clarinet, I’d really appreciate hearing from you.

Many thanks!

Katherine Smith

This may not be quite what you had in mind, but Harrison Birtwhistle started off as a clarinet player.

If you're willing to expand that to performer-composer-improvisor then I recommend listening to music by people like Louis Sclavis, Jacques Di Donato, Armand Angster, Michel Portal, Denis Colin (all from France).

Two of my best CDs are by Trio De Clarinettes which includes the first three musicians I mentioned.

One of them is the trio live on FMP -
http://www.fmp-online.de/eframeset.htm (not the most
user friendly website)- click on CATALOGUE (bottom
left) - on the left list scroll to TRIO DE CLARINETTES
and click.

The other is Double Trio Green Dolphy Suite on Enja (also with the Aracado String Trio) - http://www.enjarecords.com/cd.php?nr=ENJ-9011

Hey, I'm an Australian clarinetist Interested in Burke's playing also:

About clarinet composers: I recently read an article that reviewed the work of a modern clarinetist, who I consider to be the best in the world, that performed his own music with great success.

** http://www.martinfrost.se/news.asp?show=76 ** The link will provide further information.

From what I've read Martin Frost's compositions are at least as "Out there" as Brigid Burke's work. I especially respect Frost for his pioneering of and reciprocation back to the musical community via composition and inspiring various composers, As well as recording and performing huge amounts of "standard repertoire".

Sorry Frost is the only clarinetist-composer-performer I can think of at the moment, I'm sure there are many more out there.

Hope some of this helps,

-Liam

Almost as far off-topic as GBK's American-dominated list:

Famous deceased members of the Rolling Stones who played clarinet (quite competently it would seem):

Brian Jones.

My personal favorite clarinetist/composer has got to be Alfred Prinz. His music is very interesting, and... his performance of the Mozart Concerto is one of the most famous.

Go with him.

Pete Townsend of The Who told David Letterman in an interview that he really wanted to play clarinet, like his father. But his aunt gave him a Spanish-guitar-shaped-object as a gift, and his parents insisted that he practice that regularly before they'd buy him a better instrument.

Also, Brian Eno has played clarinet. However, that was as a member of the Portsmouth Sinfonia, where everyone was required to play an instrument they weren't familiar with.

How about Paul Harvey? He has a clarinet background and a number of nice compositions out there.

Another clarinet player / composer is Meyer Kupferman (1926-2003).
