I've used expertvillage clips before, but never saw this one! Well, it's a nice intro for beginners who'd like to know a little about the instrument as a whole. Not what I hope I sound like, but then again I'm no Bonade myself.

Almost had a heart attack when I saw the YouTube link because I thought it might be me!!!!!!
Hilarious. Pathetic. Love what someone wrote "1. That's not the range of the clarinet. 2. You suck. 3. Kill yourself."
LOL. Actually, COL.

Watch the Types of Clarinet: Clarinet Family video. The "contrabass clarinet". Has anyone ever heard of this guy?

Music, and the clarinet's function in it, is oh-so-clear now. When he went to the third style I was dreading some Klezmer impression.
He alludes to changes in sound without creating any. Kind of like the Kevin Costner of the clarinet world.

Alex,
He's "waggle" tonguing. Tip of the tongue attacking first below then above (repeat) at the tip of the reed.

THat was really pathetic. My daughter has first and second year students who sound as good as that clown!
I liked the comment, "I didn't know George Kostanza played the clarinet!"

How they can call this site "ExpertVillage" is beyond me. They should rename it "Village Idiots"

GBK,
Thanks for the link - I loved the video on "Boar's Oil"! Now I know that I just have to be careful not to store my clarinets in a moldy area or in the car for long periods of time (who would have thought!). The clarinet lesson was also very interesting. I never knew that vibrato was an integral part of Dixie Land, classical, and marching music!

His sound wasn't so bad, but his theory and "styles" are seriously misguided.
For the "classical" i was expecting the Mozart concerto or something...his example didn't register with me at all...
I didn't realize that "marching band" was a style...

Back when I was learning to juggle, I checked out the juggling videos magnaminously supplied by the expert village - not the most helpful source out there!
Better than nothing, I suppose though.
That's the chore of internet-learning: sifting for gold through all the mud!
I feel better now.

It's funny that on his accessory video his lyre fits on his barrel. He must have to take his glasses off to play or something

It's a Brilhart Ebolin(e?) isn't it? Not very expensive.
I think somebody from here should make a superior video to his and send it to ExpertVillage just to blow him out of the water and prevent any misconceived ideas and playing deficiencies.
I would do it but it would just be to embarrassing that a HS sophomore could play better than him in so many ways... Plus I can't give examples of styles very well!

Better yet, do them exactly like his videos, down to the word, except for corrections on his mistakes. Oh, and choose better style examples. Be sure to throw in snide comments about things he is doing wrong, without specifically naming him. "Vibrato, when used out of context, demonstrates poor understanding of music, and the clarinet."

Is this a joke?!?!?
Expertise: Proficient on multiple instruments, Mitch Kaplan has performed and taught music for TWO DECADES.

I like his description of the music stand accessory. it's just a riot! you can almost imagine him saying: use this top metal thingy and put it in the other thingy. and that's how you do it.

Actually, the shillac (or other heat adhesive) can shatter from a sudden drop in temerature and the pads CAN fall out. It can be worse on sax, but it can happen on clarinet too. It can be prevented if the pad cup is textured before the shillac is put into the cup.

Hi MichaelR,
Yes, real gems. Perlove is such a wonderful extemporaneous speaker and a marvelous player. What an engaging personality.
Having never been quite satisfied with my flute vibrato, I am practicing the vibrato exercise she demonstrates that she learned from her teacher (it's like getting masterclass from Kincaid). I have learned much and have my flute on a peg close by . I practice the exercise often.
Now if someone would do the same type thing for clarinet (other than Mitch Kaplan).
HRL
PS Check out the flute playing by some of the teenagers. Wow.

Correction. It WAS my favorite until I saw the one about the metronome.
http://www.expertvillage.com/videos/clarinet-for-beginners-metronome.htm
Here he talks about the silent flashing light, and how's it's good for practicing at night without driving the wife crazy. You'd think that the clarinet playing itself would be louder and more annoying than any sound the metronome emits, wouldn't you!?
Also, just how does a metronome "calibrate your tone"?

Is anyone still up to make a better series of videos? The clarinet world could use some GOOD instructional videos. I can't even recommend any videos to my friends who need to work on certain areas of their playing and technique. They don't really like learning themselves from books and the lesson teacher that comes to the school isn't so great. A free video online would be an easy way (for them) to learn. I would make the video, but I play more bass clarinet than clarinet nowadays and I may sound as bad as this Mitch guy in some people's opinions.

He closes his throat as opposed to using his tongue to stop his sound. Well...then again...I'm all for ANY technique that would stop his sound!

WOW! I can't believe how many videos the same guy has.
Follow this link to see another instructor with 15 years experience do all the things that i have my students watch videos to PREVENT:
My list of violations is as follows:
1 - Handles upper joint with right hand rather than left
2 - Makes sure that there will be a swordfight between the two components of the bridge key.
3 - presses on barrel and mouthpiece with almost no twisting
See if you see others...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRcl0skINVU
I could almost live with this if she at least showed something of value, but the whole video is about proper assembly. I hope it wasn't done as a project for her masters...

Her hand position is horrible. Fingers at almost 45 degrees to the instrument, though that could just be because she's holding it up to the camera. Not a good thing to go along with a demonstration of proper hand position, in any case.
Also, the suggestion to keep blowing harder if you're not getting a sound isn't likely to get you far. Much more likely to be a result of poor assembly or bum reed.

On second look, I was also pretty disappointed with how little of mpc/reed/ligature setup, and embouchure was dealt with. If I were making a beginner video, I would want to clearly show the following:
1 - That the reed needs to be wet ALL THE WAY down its flat surface, where the brand name appears. So many kids wet half the reed and still have a bone-dry seal with the mouthpiece table.
2 - That the reed needs to be aligned almost to the very end of the mouthpiece. Many put the reed too low, and the "Standard of Excellence" band books have a drawing that would reinforce this mistake. (probably from using a chisel-tip pen)
3 - That the ligature needs to be below the cutaway of the reed...and on a part of the mouthpiece that is actually round.
This is critical stuff, and would only take a couple of seconds to zoom in on. And I can't believe that there was no discussion of embouchure other than just putting the horn in her mouth. What good does it do to talk about warm vs. cold air, and tongue position when you don't even show them how to set up your lips and facial muscles?
Okay. I'm done ranting. My own fault for expecting standards on the internet.

Hi,
I haven't seen the one about metronomes controling tone, and I don't think I could bear to search for it........ I'll take your word.
I was amazed to find that the one where he advises beginners to pull out the joints to sharpen the instrument is still there.
It would be hard to better his advice, but here goes...........
Suggestion 1......... A minim in the Chalumeau register is equal to two tied semitones in the Clarion register.
Suggestion 2......... Leather pads will stop your decibels from squeaking.
Would anyone care to extend this list?.......... H&P.

On the topic of assembling the instrument, I personally don't like the idea of my beginners assembling the instrument with the case on their lap. I could just see a tiny 5th grader putting together the first two pieces, unwittingly shifting his weight on the chair, and - oops! everything falls to the floor. A bent trill key, and his first week of playing clarinet is not so fun anymore.
