Hello,
I just spoke to a gentleman who played clarinet with Iggy Gennusa, Anthony Gigliotti, and Kal Opperman in various orchestras. What a great walk down memory lane for him and what interesting stories for me!
Anyhow, he is 81 years old and is having difficulty with arthritis, especially in the index finger of his left hand. This, of course, is making playing the clarinet difficult for him.
I wondered if there was a hand specialist that anyone knows about that might give this gentleman some relief. I don't know about his ability to travel, but he lives in Baltimore, Maryland, so if anyone knows someone in the D.C./Baltimore or even Philadelphia region, it would be good to know.
Thanks and Happy New Year to all!

Ben,
Your friend may want to contact Clifton Bingham, III, MD - he's Professor of Rheumatology at Hopkins and also runs its Rheumatology clinics.
Good luck.

Hi,
I have a grandson who is a very fine free safety on his high school's football team. He has been diagnosed recently by a sport's medicine orthopedic surgeon with a classic case of flexor digitorum profundas (aka "jersey finger").
Although Grandson Matthew is probably not going to go the surgical route for repair at this time, he is beginning to pursue a rigorous PT regimen for his left hand. While I realize that Matthew has damage to the finger flexor tendon, perhaps there is some PT help along this same line for your friend.

I know this is going to sound way too simplistic, but I had arthritis pain in my fingers, left knee and left hip.
After I started taking one Tbs of Omega 3 oil, I am pain free and have been ever since. (I use Carlson liquid Omega 3 oil)
However, I know that we are all different, so what works for me may not work for him. But, I think it might be worth a try.
(Omega 3 oil is well known for reducing inflammation.)
Just my 0.02 cents worth.

As well as what Dan said about the Omega 3 oil (or fish oil - at least 10 grams liquid per day) get him to perhaps try -
- Glucosamine & chondroitin supplement - VERY good for arthritis apparently
- Turmeric (supplement, not cooking powder - supplemental form is of much higher quality/potency). Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory.
- and a generally healthy diet that is not too acidic + drink plenty of water.
hope he can see some improvement...

Yay! Go natural! The pharmacueticals(sp?) for the most part are not worth it. Fish Oil also works for ADD! I'm a living testament to that. Good for brain, lungs, and joint relief. Because we are missing that from our normal diets.

So will water, salt, apples, and vinegar.

I'm not a hand specialist, but have arthritis and also have broken my right hand (complete with torn ligaments) and can give some personal hints. First of all, keep your hand limber with exercises. You might also look into a paraffhin machine at the local Walgreen's. A good soak for 10 min. or so a couple or three times a day really helps to keep the joints moving.
The meds are a personal thing. If the Omega 3 works, great. If not, use some Tylenol Extra Strength for arthritis or go to your physician and get something like Celebrex.

Hi Brenda,
You are right about arthritis and the personal thing concerning meds. For my osteoarthritis of the left knee, my orthopod has perscribed something that works great on the pain solely. However, for the plain old, every day stiffness, one OTC ibuprophen works wonders. It's all about pain relief and/or inflammation.
Again though as has always been said on this BB "consult your physician or health-care professional..."
