Dark, Scary, Haunting pieces for clarinet?
Author: MJSmith
Date:   2007-12-31 08:20

My clarinet students at the middle school and high school want to do a clarinet concert... And they want to theme the concert with dark pieces. I do not know of many solos or chamber music works that really fit that (at least, not what the students want).

Any suggestions, list away!

Charles Gounod's Funeral March of a Marionette is great for Clarinet quartet.

The theme to the old "Alfred Hitchcock Show"!

Arrangements of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor might be adaptable.

A good cl f[r]iend , fine classical player, gave us 2 concerts last week, playing a number of MMO cl solos, Dixie and Jazz, the most haunting, IMHO, was Harlem Nocture, which starts on low B. I'm considering playing it on bass cl, perhaps alto cl, to employ the horn's fine chalameau , hollow sounds. Other "melancholy" tunes, Misty comes to mind, might be good. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Sorry for the confusion, I was merely supplying a nostalgic reference to David's post . That'll teach me not to use incomplete sentences! :)

Well, "Song of the Volga Boatmen" - esp. with the bass (or even contra) clarinet playing the lead - would be pretty dark & haunting.

Then tear into a furiously accelerating "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and scare all the little kids in the audience half out of their wits . . . and rattle many of their mommies, too!

Well most music from scary films and TV shows would probably go down well. I particularly like the theme which is on Midsomer Murders - but I don't know if it is available to play. Didn't Silence of the Lambs have a good theme as well?
Sounds like a fab concert. Enjoy it!

incidently, the last lamb movie (not the one with the young Lechter, but one before it) had David Shifrin's cousin Lalo Schifrin conducting onscreen in the film. (yes, the cousins spell their last name differently but they are related as David Shifrin told me)

scary and haunting? Just let me play any piece for you. I guarantee you'll lay awake at night in a cold sweat rocking side to side in the fetal position.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

I just ran across one at the weekend: in a little book I have from the ABRSM, 'Clarinet Folk Weave', by Gordon Lewin: unaccompanied solo for Bb or Bass entitled 'Weltschmerz'. Composer's notes stick in the mind, something like '... a bitter-sweet evocation of old Vienna, as if the last piece of sachertorte has finally been relinquished by Johann Strauss to Gustav Mahler ...'

The most hair-on-the-back-of-neck-raising piece involving clarinet that I've heard performed is Ariel by Ned Rorem, a setting of poems by Sylvia Plath for soprano, clarinet, and piano. Perhaps not suitable to a middle school performance, however.

Here's a recording available of Ariel: http://cdbaby.com/cd/rorem2

How about the Witches Sabbath from Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique? You need a good Eb, and might have to do some arranging, but it could be very cool.
