 Two clarinets and voice
Author: sdr

Anyone have suggestions for some pieces scored for two clarinets and voice? My son and I play clarinet duets often but we'd like to include my wife, who is a vocalist. Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks and Happy New Year.

I know only of two versions of "Elegy for JFK", by Stravinsky, one for Mezzo, and one for Baritone and 3 clarinets. Perhaps you have another clarinetist. They are alas, only 1.54 minutes in length

If a piano can be added: there are something like 10 volumes of Bach cantata arias for 1 or 2 voices, piano, and 1 or more obbligato instruments. You might find a few useful items here, though you'll have some transposing to do.

Alternatively, you might look for things scored for flute & 2 clarinets, in which case your wife would vocalize the flute part.

I can't think of anything directly for that combination, but here's some ideas.

Aaron Copland composed "As It Fell Upon A Day" for voice, flute, and clarinet.
The flute part might adapt adequately to another clarinet.

Mozart composed six Notturni for three voices and three clarinets/bassett horns.
Most of these have a lot of overlap between the vocal and instrument parts,
and can be readily compressed into three parts, especially if one of the
instruments is bass clarinet. Three of these are in an inexpensive choral
octavo edition of "Three Nocturnes" from Plymouth Music Editions.
These have worked as well for three vocal parts without instruments.

Rounds in three parts can be played by two and sung by one.
There are a lot of challenging rounds by Henry Purcell, for starters.

Renaissance tricinias (counterpuntal music in three parts) can be performed
as a combination of vocal and instrumental parts. Kodaly composed a number of tricinias as part of his singing method.

For that matter, look for any unaccompanied SSA choral arrangements
that keep the main tune in the top line.

Ecxellent suggestions fro James. I think that some, at least, of the Mozart Notturni could be performed with voice and two Bb clarinets - with a bit of juggling on the bottom part.

Quatrains by Milton Babbitt for soprano and 2 clarinets.
