 Clarinet, Violin, and Percussion
Author: Neal Raskin

I and two fellow musicians are looking for repertoire to perform. Does anyone know of some repertoire for clarinet (any key), violin, and percussion (ie. marimba, vibes)?? We have found something of incredible difficulty titled "And Legions Will Rise" by Kevin Puts. Just looking for some possibilities.

Thanks,
Neal R.

"Foggy Mountain Breakdown," play the vocal on clarinet, have the percussionist beat a washtub. Wear ZZ Top beards.

The closest I can think of is Libby Larsen's "Corker", but that's for clarinet and percussion.

From the Luyben Music catalog (<www.luybenmusic.com>) under the heading, "Clarinet and Percussion":

BOUCOURECHLIEV, Tombeau
BROWN, Energies
FINNEY, 2 Acts for 3 Players
PRESCOTT, Chris Clarinet (cl/xylo/pa)

I don't know anything about any of these pieces but if you call Luyben, they might be able to look at the music and give you a sense of its level of difficulty. My priors on Boucourechliev and Finney are that they would likely be difficult.

A couple of other pieces are listed in the composition database on this site under 3 performers.

Best regards,
jnk

Are transcriptions an option? You might want to check out Bela Fleck's "Perpetual motion" album (chamber music for banjo with various instruments) for ideas.

With a lot of arranging and a lot of imagination, you might be able to perform something from The Soldier's Tale. I can imagine that it could be possible to conjure up the spirit of the original, using your trio of instruments. (It uses violin, clarinet, drums - but also double-bass, cornet, trombone, bassoon.)

I was doing a little more research, and I found a piece called "Classical Kick" by Ira-Paul Schwarz. Has anybody heard of this piece and could you give me an MP3 to see if I like it? Some songs on the C. Alan Publications website have sample pages and a sample recording. But no such luck for this piece. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Neal R.
