 favorite bass clarinet CD's

Was wondering what your favorite bas clarinet CD's are and why. Am trying to build a collection and perhaps choose pieces from these for potential audition/ recital pieces. Am amazed at the variety of sounds the different performers have on the ones I do have. Am thinking I like Bok's sound about the best so far. REALLY BIG. Anyway, I'd appreciate any and all comments pro and con.

One of the best clarinet or any CDs you can buy is the live concert of Trio De Clarinettes from France which are Jacques Di Donato, Louis Sclavis and Armand Angster. On this CD all three play soprano and bass clarinets and Angster also plays contrabass clarinet.

Another great (and possibly even better) CD is the same trio together with the American string trio Arcaro (Mark Feldman on violin, Mark Dresser on bass and Dutch cellist Ernst Reiseger replacing original member Hank Roberts). I can honestly say this CD changed my life in the way I listen to music.

Louis Scalvis from the trio I mentioned also have a lot of his own CDs where he plays mostly bass clarinet (and also soprano clarinet and soprano saxophone). There are a lot but I can recommend the ones I like the most if you want.

Another great bass clarinetist is Denis Colin from France. I have two CDs of him. One is a trio with cello and zarb which is excellent. It is live concert from a festival (something with Bleus in the name I think, forgot now sorry). Another is a relatively new one with the same trio and a lot of guests which is not so good IMO.

Also from France is Michel Portal who I like very much too. He has two CDs duo with Richard Galliano on accordion which are great. He has many other CDs and some are also great (I can look for the specific names later if you want).

A very good solo CD is This Is Not A Clarinet by Evan Zyporin (or Ziporyn, not sure of the spelling). It has two long solo pieces for bass clarinet (and the rest for solo soprano clarinet or overdubbed duo).

There are a lot more but these are my main recommendations for a start.

Clarnibass,

Those are great! I don't have a single one of those! Thew one that changed your life is one I MUST own! I have stayed away from mixed groups of instruments but i certainly won't know.

I only have one specific bass clarinet CD but I like it a lot both for the music and the recording quality. "Windows on the bass clarinet" with chamber music for bass clarinet (with piano, strings,...) from various composers. Jan Guns on bass clarinet.

I'm certainly going to look for some of clarnibasses suggestions -- they sound interesting...

Do a web search for...
Petra Stump
Heinz Peter Linshalm
(or "Stump-Linshalm")
they have several CDs out of new music on Bass Clarinet (very modern sounding stuff, just to let you know).
I have a CD of them playing a piece by Pierluigi Billone called "1+1=1" where they play with fabulous tone and ensemble.

Some great recommendations above.

Some of the recordings by Giora Feidman are concentrated on bass clarinet, so take a look there.

Of course don't forget Henri Bok, Harry Spaarnay, and Josef Horak. Although I have had hard time tracking down any Horak recordings.

I am sure you know about Eric Dolphy? Then there is Michael Lowenstein.

I love Victoria Soames' recording of Thea Musgrave's Bass Clarinet Concerto. A must!

There is a whole bunch of avand garde players in Europe doing improvised jazzy stuff with bass clarinet. Google is your friend.

I also enjoy Lucien Dubuis' recording on bass and contrabass clarinet.

Lawrie Bloom recorded a solo CD recently, you can buy it from Walter Grabner's website.

This should get you started.

There isn't that many bass clarinet CDs around, so if you are really into collecting them, you might as well grab all that you encounter.

I'm a big fan of Edmund Welles' CD, Agrippa's 3 books. That is if you like bass clarinet quartet music of course.

Speaking of Edmund Welles or Cornelius Boots, its founder, they just put out a new album:

For a non-standard answer, from a non-standard guy, check out Caroline Glass (no relation) at http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=46150525

Specifically I like the 'Tinfoil Hat'. Her performance in that song is the reason, oh and Eric Dolphy's bass clarinet stylings, that I purchased a bass clarinet. :o)

Lots of good suggestions that I will add to my Xmas list.

Eric Dolphy's "God bless the Child"of "The Illinois Concert" is a must for Jazz Bass clarinet. David Murray has a Bass clarinet Ballad CD that I am trying to track down. He plays bass clarinet on many of his albums, plus with World Sax Quartet.

I don't know how I forgot Eric Dolphy but you should listen to him too. Although their music is also very different in some ways he is a big influence on many of the players I mentioned. I suggest to start with the CD Far Cry and also Out To Lunch but there are so many more!

Wow this is going to be such fun tracking these all down. Compared to the Bb CD list this should be much easier.

Besides the Bok that I mentioned (BASSics, a very interesting CD), I have three others that I like rather well, although all are quite different in tone and type of music.

Bass Clarinet with Renate Rusche as soloist I like quite a bit. She gives one of the nicest interpretations of the Schoeck Sonata.

Due Boemi di Praga with Josef Horak has a lot of pieces nowhere else on a CD and a couple are very nice. Some a little too out there for me. Blame it on too much Weber and Mozart in my past!

The Lawrie Bloom CD I like because he is using the same equipment as I have and it helps me to gauge my own sound and technique. Or at least something to emulate.

This has been a neat thread. Thank you all.

The Ian Krouse Bass Clarinet Concerto with Lawrie Bloom, but it's a live concert recording not released.

Just about the coolest thing I've ever heard - especially on Bass Clarinet.

Also, the John Rogers Solo for Bass Clarinet featuring Bass Clarinetist Anthony Burr is quite cool (on Itunes). Album is "a rose is a rose"

Is it, though? Sure you're not just caught up in the name on the CD cover?

Along these lines, I think that both Bob Mintzer, though I've only heard a few examples of his playing, and Don Byron are fantastic bass clarinet players.

I've listened to Byron on some of Bill Frissels playing and he has a big beautiful sound and good technique. It is somewhat of an eclectic style so you might want to listen to some examples before you buy.

I've had a lot of friends chastise me but personally, I'm not a big Dolphy fan. Now that I have my bass clarinet (1958 Selmer Paris w/low Eb) I'm really looking to check out some recordings myself so I'm going to re-examine Dolphy but in the past I remember being frustrated with him not playing the 'normal' technique of the instrument with all of his grunts and multi-phonics. I want to check out Mintzer more because I remember listening to maybe just one track of his that was eyebrow raising quite a few years ago. I remember his having a fantastic tone and clean technique. If anyone knows of his recordings that feature his bass it would be helpful for me. He’s not a shabby tenor sax player either.

Actually Dolphy doesn't play a lot of multiphonics and grunts, etc. and most of what he plays is "normal" technique. Also imo it doesn't matter at all what techniques he (or anyone) uses, what matters is how they fit to the specific music and in Dolphy's case they fit completely with his ideas of the music.

Sir Donald, the J B Yeh CD I have is itself titled "Dialogues With My Shadow" and although the majority of the works on the album are for single or multitracked (with or without tape accompaniment) soprano clarinet, the very first piece is for unaccompanied, solo bass clarinet (might possibly be the "title cut", not sure as I'm writing this from work and the album is at home). Just that piece alone is worth the price of the entire CD. I don't know how one would obtain the CD, though.

The bass clarinet piece on the Yeh CD is "Towards the Crest" by Robert Carl. There are copies of the CD (starting at $1.97) for sale through Amazon.com.

Best regards,
jnk
