I'm looking to purchase the Brahms Trio for clarinet, cello and piano. I checked online and there are two publications, one by Henle and one by CF Peters. Has anyone compared the two publications and have a preference (other than price)?

Hi
Actually, I don't have an answer to your question. Sorry
But I was listening to a great recording just today, so I thought I'd inform you of it... Richard Stoltzman, Yo-Yo Ma, and Emanuel Ax have a CD out with that Brahms trio, as well as Beethoven's and Mozart's for the same instrumentation (Sony Classical). It's beautiful -- one of my favorites.Just thought I'd let you know if you hadn't heard it.
Good luck discovering the preferred edition!

I have the Henle edition, but I've never compared it to the Peters. Henle is an "Urtext", which means the editor tried to reproduce as best as possible the origninal version of the work as penned by Brahms. Whereas the Peters edition may or may not be based on the earliest printed versions, Henle bases its edition on Brahms's autograph copy (before it was sent to the printer).
I find the Henle edition well printed and clearly set without much crowding of notes. I would expect similar from Peters. For example, the Peters edition of the Brahms Sonatas (which I do have) are very nicely printed. Both Henle and Peters produce high quality editions.
